Who: Indie Lee
What: Effective skincare packed with all-natural ingredients like avocado and lavender oil, fruit extracts, calendula, and chamomile that really work--and look great on your vanity!
Why: We know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but the truth is that Indie Lee’s clean, bright packaging caught our eye. Luckily, what’s inside exceeds our expectations, too. Lee was a CPA and CFO before she decided she wanted to “go back to basics” and start an organic farm. In 2008, she was running a 750-square-foot green house and selling her edible flowers and fresh botanicals to Whole Foods when her doctor diagnosed her with a brain tumour. “I talked to neurologists and endocrinologists at hospitals and universities, and finally one turned to me and said my illness was environmentally related. What? I have an organic farm!” The doctor asked Lee what she was putting on her body--after all, your skin is your largest organ and it absorbs 60% of what it touches. She calls it her “aha moment!”
“I’m a type A personality,” Lee says. So after a handful of doctors told her she had six months to live, she found one to do the surgery she needed, got a clean bill of health, and launched her line of all-natural products. “The first product I made was the Coconut Citrus Body Scrub ($38) she says. “The chemo was drying out my skin, but I’m a klutz, so using oil in the shower wasn’t going to work. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature.”
Lee’s most proud of her Squalane Facial Oil ($32)--“I didn’t make it,” she clarifies. “It comes from nature, but I think more people should know about it. Our body produces squalane, a hydrocarbon found in sebum, until age 23 and then it slows down, so instead of adding something foreign to your body why not use what your body’s familiar with?”
And anyone lamenting the lack of highly pigmented, effective colour cosmetics that earn the coveted “all-natural” label (Ginnifer Goodwin included) will be thrilled to learn that Lee’s hard at work developing hers: “It’s difficult, but I’m going to make it happen!” We have no doubt.
