Food-Grade Ingredients!

Every day, we make countless "green" lifestyle choices: using glass water bottles over plastic ones, picking recycled packaging, and buying pesticide-free produce. But when it comes to our beauty routines, we haven't been quite so vigilant, to put it mildly. Considering the fact that many beauty products contain loads of chemicals and artificial ingredients that have been linked to skin irritation, hormonal disruption, and health concerns later in life, we knew that addressing this issue was important, but it turns out that it's also quite simple to do. The key is to look for products that are made exclusively of food-grade ingredients. So what makes something "food grade" and why is it noteworthy? The phrase refers to anything fit for human consumption, a definition that stands for beauty products, too. That means every single ingredient in a particular item--say, a lipstick or body scrub--could, in theory, be safely eaten. (We don't recommend snacking on any of the featured products, but it's nice to know how natural they are!)

More importantly, these non-irritating beauty essentials are perfect for anyone with sensitive skin or allergies; just think of them as amazing, natural alternatives to your everyday essentials. So whether you're a health-conscious cosmetics junkie, looking for non-toxic alternatives, or simply want to rid your medicine cabinet of some chemicals, be sure to check out these hard-working products made from 100% food-grade ingredients!

1. Celadon Road Sweet Orange, Cinnamon & Clove Sugar Scrub ($30)
This scrub has a coarse texture (thanks to the raw sugar), and moisturizes without being greasy. We adore the deep and warm scent that makes us feel like it's Thanksgiving Day, in the best way possible.

2. Bite Beauty High Pigment Matte Pencils ($24) in Bouquet and Grapevine
The pencils come in rich colours and have a smooth consistency, plus they're packed with antioxidants (from wine, no less!) and ultra-moisturizing shea butter. Our favourites are a rich fuchsia and flattering peachy pink, appropriately named Grapevine and Bouquet.

3. Dr. Alkaitis Organic Mascara & Eye Makeup Remover ($40)
This widely praised makeup remover has only one ingredient--virgin, cold-pressed, organic almond oil. We tried it and it really does remove our shadow and mascara without the help of chemicals. We're impressed.

4. 100% Pure Cosmetics Coconut Body Scrub ($25)
As soon as we opened this tub of vegan scrub we knew it was going to be a winner (that's how heavenly it smells), but once we tried it, we were hooked. It is a powerful exfoliator, thanks to a formula that's full of fine granules of sugar, and it leaves our skin moisturized, but not greasy. Best of all: its yummy scent lingers for hours after you use it.

5. 100% Pure Cosmetics Fruit Pigmented Blush ($25) in Mimosa
When we read that the pigments in this blush come from fruit and vegetables, we half expected it not to work. Luckily, quite the opposite was true; the colour lasted all day without fading. There are 13 shades to pick from, but we like Mimosa, a light coral hue, best.

6. The Body Deli Melon-Peptide Crème Gel ($85)
This face cream feels super luxurious and is packed with all-natural ingredients like cantaloupe, aloe vera, Q10, carrot seed oil-and the list goes on. We love the turmeric-coloured bright orange hue, plus it's deeply moisturizing and has anti-ageing peptides.

7. Miessence Jaffa Lip Balm ($8)
This balm is 100% organic, and made from cold-pressed unrefined oils, fruit butter, and beeswax. But the best part is its light orange and vanilla scent.

8. Ilia Multi-Stick ($34) in All of Me
If you want convenience and natural ingredients, look for multipurpose items like this chunky stick--it can be used as a blush, lip colour, and eye shadow. It has a creamy, dewy texture, blends easily, and is available in four shades. We like All Of Me, a universally flattering pink.
