"The great thing about Rebecca Minkoff," says Essie's lead manicurist Michelle Saunders, "is that she really thinks head-to-toe." So it figures that not just the clothes at yesterday's SS/14 runway show were inspired by the designer's recent trip to Mexico, but the beauty look, too.
Stila's makeup artist Sarah Lucero was thinking, "adobe, neutrals, matte" while she was plumping the models' full brows. Meanwhile, Tresemme's Jeanie Syfu created "very messy" braided crowns. If the combination sounds like an homage to Frida Kahlo, your'e on the right track. When it came to nails, Saunders asked herself, "What would Frida Kahlo wear today?" before answering her own question: "She would wear custom nail art!"
Saunders and her team started by painting both fingers and toes with Essie's Nail Polish ($8) in Tart Deco before choosing four random nails on which to paint Day of the Dead-inpsired skulls, flowers, and polka dots with Butler Please, Blanc, and Licorice. "The folk art weaves itself throughout the collection," Saunders said. If real art is the new frontier of nail art, well, we can definitely get behind that.
