Call us biased, but Shoshanna is easily our favourite character on Girls. While Marnie and Hannah self-obsess, and Jessa is off…being Jessa, Shosh is blunt, unabashedly herself, and says things like, “He works in product development, which is perfect for me because I love products!” (Preach.) In honour of last night’s finale, we spoke with Girls hairstylist and Scünci ambassador Sherry Heart, and asked her about her inspiration for all of Shoshanna’s scene-stealing ‘dos.
Heart tells us that Shoshannan is “the kind of girl who creates her own interpretation of the hairdos she sees in fashion magazines.” (Not that that there’s anything wrong with that!) “She’s a very quirky girl and we try to express and enhance her unique personality through her hair, makeup and wardrobe,” Heart says. From side braids, doughnut buns, and blue turbans, keep scrolling for Heart’s breakdown of Shosh’s most iconic hair looks!
“Shosh is imagining she’s spending a day at the Kentucky Derby. I have always felt that Shoshanna is really trying to create a polished look for herself. It’s my impression that she wants to look finished, put together, and perfect from head to toe. Maybe she sees herself as her own mannequin, wearing the latest fashions in hair and makeup. She is ever-changing and never wants to be pigeonholed.”
“A simple twist or braid into a side bun will have you looking as cute as Shosh does here. This is a look you can wear day or night, and it will definitely help you stand out.”
“In season two, we started doing lots of braids on the girls. I figured Shosh would want to be one of the first to rock that trend. It doesn't matter which side you braid your hair—just make up your own design, then pull it all back with a Scünci Knotted Ponytail Holder.”
“This is Shosh’s ‘I’m running errands’ look, but she is still able to look cute while going to the store. Shosh is always trying to achieve an authentic look with her style to set her apart from the rest—I feel she has succeeded here with her top braid and low side pony.”
“I loved the Heidi braids on her—she wanted more of a summertime, no-nonsense vacation hairdo. Get the look by parting your hair down the middle and doing a low braid on each side. This can be a fish tail or four-strand braid. Mix it up! Pin your braids up over the top of your head securely…and there you have it!”
"This is what I call Shoshanna ‘Ultra-Chic Around the House.’ How can you go wrong with the Scunci headband that matches her robe? Oh, and a scrunchie! And, don’t forget the matching rubber gloves!”
“I had fun with Shosh’s bob this last season. I used a lot of cute barrettes to add some pop to her hair. Get the look by curling the front ends back and the rest of your hair under.”
“Like every one else, I too loved the donut bun Shosh sported in season two. It was so representative of just how quirky and fun she is. Her character is full of adventure and takes chances—and that bun proved it. Just to have SNL create a parody of the hairdo was a real treat. I was laughing so hard! What a compliment! Anytime my team and I put out a hairdo that goes viral, I'm really proud! As they say, parody is the best form of flattery.”
