If you struggle with rosacea, you've most likely got a list of your own trigger foods, drinks and situations. A cursory round of googling will tell you that spicy food, caffeine and stress can all cause flare-ups of that pesky redness. Red wine is often cited as a no-no for anyone with sensitive skin, but a new study published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology has found that it's actually white wine that could be the cause of the condition in the first place.
Surveying 83,000 women in the U.S., they found that those who consumed one to three glasses of white a week had a 14% increase in their chances of developing rosacea. For women who consumed five or more glasses a week, that risk jumped to 49%.
The study also looked at alcohol drinkers (think whiskey, vodka, gin) and red wine drinkers, and while liquor drinkers saw an 8% to 28% increase in their chances of going on to develop rosacea, red wine didn't come out as a significant development risk.
The upshot? Yes, if you already have rosacea, a glass of merlot may well give you that just-been-in-the-sauna flush (as well as a lick of Mother Nature's lipstick). But thanks to the anti-inflammatory ingredients found in red grapes, it's unlikely to give you rosacea in the first place. The reason that it can be a trigger for people with the condition is the fact it contains histamines, an irritant that can cause you to go red.
On the plus side, the study didn't say anything about rosé wine, which is possibly the most delicious (and Instagrammable) of them all. Bottoms up!
