Red wine lips are having a moment—perhaps it's to prepare us for the even darker, vampier lips headed our way for autumn (thanks, Dior!). Unlike an almost-black glossy lip, you can find a vampy red shade to suit you whether you’re fair skinned like Kirstin Dunst, have dark brunette locks like Rooney Mara or want to buck the matte lip trend and embrace gloss like Chrissy Teigen. This trend’s got more sass than you can shake a (lip)stick at. Click through the gallery for some much-needed beauty inspiration.
This feels very much like a nod to Margot Robbie's Suicide Squad character Harley Quinn, who is often sporting a red lip. Here, Robbie has gone for flawless skin with a hint of rosy cheeks and just a touch of mascara. To get the lip colour, try Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick in Royal Plum (£20).
Full marks go to Jan for attention to detail—she has applied a tiny bit of rust red eyeliner to the outer corners of her eyes to match her berry pout. To get your rouge lip looking just as creamy, apply a balm as a base then do two coats of Clinique Pop Lip Colour (£16) in Berry Pop. On your eyes use Zoeva red-hued pencil Graphic Eyes (£7) in Opulence.
Rooney is smart; while she knows a bold eye and a bold lip can look too done, a bold lip and a bold brow, on the other hand, look incredibly cool. Apply Benefit Hydra Smooth Lip Color (£15) in Frisky Business all over then dab Topshop Beauty Lips (£8) in Temptation in the middle of your mouth for a 3D effect like hers.
Kirsten proves in one look that pale skinned beauties can totally rock a bold lipstick shade, plus it makes her naturally narrow lips look fuller too—bonus. Choose two layers of Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour (£18) in Temptation and blot with a tissue to go even more matte.
Lucy’s just-bitten finish makes her one of our favourite queens of the red wine lip—that, and the fact that it totally brings out her utterly flawless brows. Start from the middle of your mouth and work your way out using Rimmel London The Only 1 Lipstick (£7)in 820 Oh So Wicked.
Jourdan’s teamed her burgundy lipstick with some seriously dramatic eyes and, boy, is she working it. We particularly love the gunmetal eyeshadow–red wine lip combo. Apply MAC Velvetease Lip Pencil (£18) in Velvet Teen to outline your mouth and create fuller lips then fill them in with Kiko Gossamer Emotion Lipstick (£11) in 129.
Sure, matte lipstick is having a moment, but this glossy wine lip on Chrissy looks incredible and has us reaching for the nearest clear gloss so we can add shine to our sheen-free lips immediately. We'll be adding a veil of gloss to our dark lipsticks with Lancôme's new Juicy Shaker (£17) in Cherry Symphony.
We love how Rachel has combined her full, shiny pout with long lashes and a smoky lid. It’s sultry and pretty, all at the same time. Get her lip look by applying Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick (£17)in Fig. And don’t be shy—the more layers the better.
