Whether you’re #TeamPSL or could really care less, it’s impossible to deny that pumpkin is having a moment (albeit a season-long one). Once limited to seasonal coffee variations, pie, and a certain princess’s iconic ride home, pumpkin can now be found in almost anything—just visit your local Trader Joe’s if you don’t believe us.
Hype aside, the food itself (which is actually a cultivated variety of the squash plant) has some serious oomph when it comes to its nutritional (and beautifying) profile. Chock-full of vitamins A and C, along with a healthy dose of iron, the low-cal fruit (nope, it’s not a vegetable!) is a fabulous source of skin-enhancing, inflammation-reducing antioxidants and other pretty-promoting ingredients—reason enough to begin incorporating this festive food into your beauty routine stat, and to feel a tad less guilty about that second helping of pie. Keep scrolling for three game-changing DIYS, along with some of our favourite pumpkin-infused beauty picks!
Thanks to pumpkin’s super-high water content (a whopping 90%!), this exceptionally hydrating (not to mention festive) mask will provide some TLC for damaged strands while also promoting hair growth, scalp health, and enviable shine (due to the fruit’s high potassium content). We love this recipe from beauty maven Michelle Phan. Simply mix two tablespoons of raw honey (bonus points for organic manuka) with a ½ cup of plain pumpkin puree. Slather on your hair and leave on for at least 15 minutes before washing hair as usual.
Naturally exfoliating and loaded with the aforementioned vitamins, antioxidants, and zinc, our newly dry complexions are practically begging to be slathered with the orange fruit. Feel free to apply the stuff solo (your skin will still love you)—however, for an additional toning and tightening effect, simply add one whole egg to the mix. Breaking out? Try adding a splash of apple cider vinegar—a godsend from the beauty gods and a natural astringent to help clear breakouts.
We don’t know about you, but we’re total suckers for anything that makes our skin feel like butter (especially during the cooler months when it tends to get dry and scaly). This body scrub, which gets serious points for its moisturizing and exfoliating, is our current addiction. Not only does it smell intoxicating, but dry, rough skin will feel practically reborn. (Try to not repeatedly stroke your legs afterward—we dare you.) Simply throw together ½ cup of pureed pumpkin, ¼ cup of brown sugar, ¼ cup of coconut oil, and a ½ teaspoon cinnamon.

Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum ($80)
Leave it to the brand (a staff favorite here at Byrdie HQ) to create the be-all, end-all of serums. Anti-aging, glow enhancing, and damage reversing, this little guy packs a powerful punch—pumpkin ferment included, which works to promote collagen growth and cell renewal.
Kate Somerville Exfolikate Body Intensive Exfoliating Treatment ($65)
There’s a reason that Hollywood’s elite flock to Somerville for any and all skincare needs. Thus, when the derm comes out with a product that promises a “head-to-toe glow,” we pay attention. Pumpkin enzymes (and their natural exfoliating effect) work to slough off dead skin, while caffeine, lactic and glycolic acids, and luxurious bergamot and lavender oils work together to promote softness, a more even tone, and tightening.
Peter Thomas Roth Pumpkin Enzyme Mask ($58)
A great option for acne-prone skin, this powerful, exfoliating pumpkin-infused mask will clear breakouts and renew dull and tired skin in a snap.
Desert Essence Organics Pumpkin Spice Hand Repair Cream ($9)
Okay, so this super-moisturizing hand cream doesn’t smell like you face-planted into grandma’s signature pumpkin pie, but it does contain all of the fruit’s natural skin-loving benefits. Totally organic, we love the way pumpkin seed oil and extract work to promote suppleness and a prettier, more even tone, keeping our hands looking soft and youthful.
Fig + Yarrow Body Oil in Meadow ($44)
If you’re like us, having to exit the warm steam of a shower is pretty darn disheartening. However, this body oil (which is most effective when massaged into still-damp skin after a shower) is a total game-changer—and may just cut your rinse time in half. A seductive blend of almond, pumpkin, olive, and grape oils, this luxurious elixir will enhance the look of skin and leave it feeling incredibly nourished.
