We stopped believing in fairytales long ago—around the time we realised that morosely mopping our kitchen floor would not yield a warm, loveable fairy godmother with a penchant for glass shoes. But though we’ve long since filed away those stories as strictly fantasy, we do look to one princess for inspiration on a daily basis: Aurora—more commonly known by her moniker, Sleeping Beauty. This was a girl after our own hearts, who somehow possessed the magic ability to sleep for a hundred years and still wake up looking totally fresh and kissable. Props, girl.
Today, we’re channeling Aurora’s lazy-girl vibe, and sharing seven overnight tricks to help you wake up with princess-worthy locks of your own. Because why curl, straighten, blow dry, and style, when you can sleep?

The best beauty tricks work their magic without any extra effort on your part, right? Enter: overnight hair conditioners. These potent, moisturizing hair masks penetrate your hair follicles while you sleep, and help you wake up with soft, shiny strands. Try Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Overnight Hair Rescue ($38) or Pantene Pro-V Overnight Miracle Repair Serum ($7). Apply the product with your fingers through dry hair, leave it on overnight, then wash it out in the morning for silky locks. Like magic!
We could wax poetic about the beauty wonder that is coconut oil all day, but we’ll save the sappiness and just say this: use it as a hair mask, now. Why? Well first of all, it's the only oil that has been proven to fully penetrate into your hair shaft and deliver all of its moisturizing benefits. Just apply through your strands, and twist your hair into a topknot before you sleep. In the morning, shampoo and condition as usual—you’ll feel (and see) the difference! One tip: if you’re scared of staining your pillowcase, wrap an old t-shirt or two around your pillow instead to soak up any oil stains.

Dry shampoo has been there for us on many a rainy (and lazy) day—but it works just as well during the night, too. If you know a shower isn’t in your near future (read: 8 hours from now), spritz a dry shampoo, like Dove’s Invigorating Dry Shampoo ($5) through your strands before you snooze instead. You’ll wake up with clean hair and lots of model-off-duty texture.
Put a new spin on one of the oldest tricks in the book by adding root spray into the equation. We’ve all heard of braiding your hair before you sleep and waking up with perfectly-tousled waves. It sounds good in theory, but all that braiding can actually leave your hair looking limp and lifeless at the roots. The solution? A lifting root spray, like Shu Uemura’s Fiber Lift Protective Volumizer ($38). Add it through your strands before you braid, and remember: the looser the braid, the looser the waves.
This is a trick for the curly-haired ladies: to keep your curls from getting crushed as you toss and turn, flip your head over and tie a silk scarf around your head—it should go from the nape of your neck to the top of your forehead. This will not only keep your hair out of your face, but will keep your natural curl pattern in place and leave you with perfectly-formed ringlets in the a.m.
For more natural-looking texture, try twisting your hair into buns, instead of braids. If you find yourself waking up with frizzy strands every morning, your pillowcase could be to blame—yes, your pillowcase. A silk or satin pillowcase won’t rough up your hair cuticle as your sleep, and will actually help your strands dry smoother, if you tend to fall asleep with damp hair.
