We often see cult hair products that are said to give you mega volume or silky-smooth locks, but sometimes they don't always apply to all hair types. What works for someone with fine hair won't necessarily work for someone with coarse, curly hair. That's where this end-all, be-all product comes in: hair masks. Sure, you know what they are or even use them yourself regularly, but it turns out there are several different ways to apply them that make the treatments a total game changer.
"It's very important to me that all of my clients do a deep-conditioning treatment once a week," says Lona Vigi, Nexxus celebrity stylist from Los Angeles. While standing in the shower for an extra 10 minutes to let the mask work its magic isn't exactly a time-friendly step,Vigi suggests you do it before your workout. With your hair in a ponytail, slightly dampen the hair, work in the hair mask, and style the hair into a braided bun so the product can soak in during your gym time. Rinse when you're done, and voilà! Restored tresses.
Hair masks also don't have to be used after you shampoo and condition; instead, for super-damaged hair, Vigi suggests you apply the mask to dry hair before you shampoo. This way, there's a barrier that will protect the ends of your hair where mega-frays and split ends usually occur.
Lastly, applying hair masks with a wide-tooth comb works best so that they're distributed evenly throughout your hair. And remember, if you have very fine hair, you don't need to use as big a dollop as someone with thick locks.
