We don’t know about you, but we’re constantly stalking models’ Instagram snaps to find out their favourite beauty products. Just how do they get that effortless glow? Some of it’s down to genetics, but there are a few downsides to the job—think heavy makeup, excess travelling, early morning castings and late-night shows. If it’s your job to look photo shoot–ready at all times, surely it must take some amount of effort to achieve glowy skin, right?
Byrdie caught up with the women signed to the Savalas Models agency to find out their go-to beauty products and any shortcuts to achieving complexion perfection. You’ll be surprised to learn it’s not all super-spendy stuff. After all, supermodel Ruby Aldridge has praised Mario Badescu’s affordable skincare, while Suki Waterhouse has said she can’t live without her skin-friendly coconut oil. “I find my contraception causes my skin to be prone to breakouts, so no matter how hard I try, it’s essentially impossible to keep it clear all the time,” Amy Ward tells me. “I keep my skincare routine as simple as possible—I wash my face with Neutrogena Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Gel Wash and use The Ordinary’s Rosehip Oil once a day to keep my skin soft. I like to change up my makeup all the time, but the one foundation I always stick to is Nars Sheer Glow. It’s lightweight but also buildable—perfect for when I have a breakout but don’t want to use a heavy concealer.”
“If I’m honest, my skincare regimen is pretty slack, but I’m prone to dry skin, so I use a serum and a really good moisturiser both morning and night,” Mina tells Byrdie. “I adore Skin Food Moisturiser in the morning and Clarins Extra Firming Night Cream in the evenings. I usually do a Body Shop Face Mask once a week, too. The Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask is my wonder product.”
“My essentials for castings and shoots would be Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Plumper, always,” says model Lucy May. “Once my lips are plumped, I remove the gloss and apply Burt’s Bees Coconut and Pear Lip Balm to give me the no-makeup makeup look. I even use it on my eyebrows. It makes them easier to brush into shape without looking too artificial, as most brow gels are too dark for my light hair and skin tone. I love having white-blonde hair, but it does require constant upkeep and a whole load of blue shampoo.
“My.Haircare Infuse My Colour Shampoo is my number one beauty essential. I can really tell when I’ve not used it for a while—brassy yellow hair is the first thing I look for in my photographs. I was actually given Rimmel Wonderfully Real Mascara at a casting, and I’ve never looked back. The transformation is dramatic, and it’s become my going-out mascara. I absolutely love it. Whilst I know microbeads are horrible for the environment, I love nothing more than exfoliating after a long day with Neutrogena Visibly Clear Stress Control Scrub. Sometimes if I can’t sleep, I’ll get up to wash my face with this product, and I’ll nearly always feel better.”
Jasmine Isabella explains her skin is really sensitive and says, “I tend to use products that agree with it, and I stick to them for the long term. I’ve been really impressed with the Milky Jelly Cleanser from Glossier and Lush Angels on Bare Skin Cleanser. My absolute favourite range is by Mario Badescu—the Facial Spray Toner is my go-to. I also use the Drying Lotion when my acne-prone skin feels like it’s going to break out. I like that the brand’s moisturisers are oil-free. They keep my skin in check for photo shoots and in day-to-day life.”
“I’ve recently discovered Wen Haircare—I rate the entire range but particularly love the Aloe Cucumber Cleansing Conditioner,” Nadia Blocker tells me. “They’ve changed the game for me. I won’t lie; my curls have been poppin’. I actually avoid wearing makeup most days if I’m not doing a photo shoot. I try to be kind to my skin—the key word there is ‘try’: It doesn’t always work out.”
For Angeliki Loannidi, anything tea tree is a must-have. “I’m tea tree–obsessed—everything from day creams to serums to shampoo. My favourite is The Body Shop’s—I use its tea tree range daily. I love the Anti-Imperfection Solution and Clearing Facial Wash—both keep my skin looking clear and feeling soft. When it comes to moisturisers, the best I’ve ever tried is Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion—nothing tops it.”
“My wonder product is definitely Garnier Micellar Water; it never leaves any trace of makeup left on my face,” Vera Munyangaju tells me. “I always notice my skin tends to get worse when I run out of it. For my hair, I always carry Luster Pink Design Control Gel in my bag. It keeps my edges smooth, and it’s flake-free, so it brushes out easily. My makeup must-have is Rimmel Eyebrow Pencil—I always do my brows, even if I have no other makeup on. I always carry tins of Vaseline Lip Therapy in my bag as I hate the feeling of dry lips.”
Melissa Fields’s main skincare priority is keeping blemishes at bay. “I’ve struggled with acne since my teens and feel like I’ve tried every skincare product under the sun to try and manage it,” she says. “I’ve now learnt that less is more when it comes to my skin. I really try to limit the products I use—I wash my face with Super Facialist Salicylic Acid Purifying Cleansing Wash in the morning and at night. Because of my oily skin, I avoid using heavy moisturisers and instead have began applying a tiny amount of pure olive oil to my face and neck each night before going to bed. It’s packed with vitamins and antitoxins that fight off acne-causing bacteria. I’ve noticed my skin feels so much smoother since using it.”
“I have extremely sensitive skin, so I love the simplicity of my Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser—I use it morning and night,” Rimka Puri explains. “I find applying Botanics All Bright Moisturiser before bed means my skin is glowing when I wake up. I use Palmer’s Cocoa Butter as an all-body moisturiser; it smells amazing and really hydrates my skin. I naturally have very straight hair, but I find L’Oréal Elvive Extraordinary Oil Shampoo and Conditioner keep my hair so sleek and smooth. These aren’t expensive products, but they’re definitely my favourites.”
