Each month, singer, actress, and fellow makeup junkie Lucy Hale will be writing a beauty column just for Byrdie readers. This month, we asked the mark. brand ambassador to talk about how her beauty style has changed over the years. Enjoy!
Hi Byrdie readers!
My beauty style has definitely evolved over the years. Looking back, it was safe to say I wore way too much makeup when I was younger. I was all about the bronzer and dark liner. On the positive side, I’ve always been daring and open to trying new things; I also went through a brow evolution over the past few years. I developed my love for beauty products as a tween, and that has only grown as I’ve gotten older. That’s why working with mark. is always so exciting, because I’m constantly getting to try out new products! My everyday look could be described as much more natural, as opposed to my younger years. My focus now is always healthy, fresh skin. I like a subtle bronze glow and a strong lash and brow—I’m more about embracing what makes me different. I love playing up my eyes and eyebrows, but it’s fine to throw in a bold, unexpected lip every now and then. Lip balm is always my best friend, too. My character Aria on Pretty Little Liars has definitely made me more adventurous. She is someone who is comfortable enough to try unexpected and daring looks.
I think you become more confident and comfortable with taking beauty risks when you get older. I’ve had a lot of fun in the last year trying new looks in photo shoots and on the red carpet. One of my favourites was from the American Music Awards, where I wore a goth-glam look with a dark wine lip. I also did a photo shoot recently where we tried graphic eyeliner and a black lip. Living in Los Angeles for the past 10 years has allowed me access to amazing fashion finds, observing the street style and being surrounded by people who are all so different. I also grew up in Tennessee, so inherently I have a bohemian vibe instilled in my blood!

This was my very first red carpet! I remember a friend of mine invited me last minute, and I was super-nervous because I was extremely shy at this age (around 15). This was my natural hair color, and as for my makeup—I actually don’t hate it!
This was my first experience with false lashes, if I remember correctly. I really wish someone would have messed up my curls a bit.
My hair was very dark during this time, and I loved the whole Snow White feel of the beauty look. I also was in love with the mustard color of this dress, which was a risky thing for me to try. If I were to wear this look now, I would’ve taken off the necklace (which I love) to have the focus on the V-neck shape of the dress, and toned down the eye makeup to really make the lip the focus of the look.
I LOVED this Dior moment. The dress was one of my favorites, and I liked how we paired the baby-blue color with an orange-toned lip. My hair was at an in-between length, but I am always up for a heavy side part!
My hair was too short to be trying glamorous waves, and I wish they were brushed out more! This was my very first CMAs and I was completely nervous, but the dress was a dream.
This look is more of my everyday beauty style. It was right around when my album Road Between came out, so this look reflects some of my country roots. We threw in some pink and purple hair chalk to try something funky.
I was so excited to have the opportunity to host the pre-show for the MTV Music Awards. We actually created two different looks that day, one for the red carpet and one for the show. This was right before I cut my hair short! This ponytail will go down as one of my favorites.
This is one of my favorite red carpet looks! I had so much fun trying something different with this lip shade. It was mark.’s Lipclick Lipstick ($11) in Whiney. My hair had recently been cut, and it was fun for me to go a bit more ombré and lighter on the ends. The ear cuff, along with all my other ear piercings, were the perfect cherry on top for a goth-glam look.
I keep cutting my hair shorter—I can’t stop! This has been my favorite length so far. I remember this was, like, a 15-hour day, and this was our last stop for the night. We were all completely exhausted, but my glam team made sure I looked my best. Kelsey Deenihan, my makeup artist, knows exactly what I like for everyday events: bronzy brown smoky eye, lots of contour, bronzy cheeks, and a nude or natural lip.
