Chanel Is Launching the Most Unexpected Mascara Colour

They say that good things come to those who wait. Well, Chanel has made us wait two years for Lucia Pica's new makeup collection for the fashion house; the makeup artist was appointed creative makeup and colour designer way back in 2014. Was the wait worth it?

Signs point to a big, fat yes. Especially if the Kristen Stewart campaign images are anything to go by.

Le Rouge Collection No.1 is set to break makeup boundaries and encourage a more playful side. Why do we say this? Well, the collection includes a red mascara. Yes, you read that correctly. The new line makes red, in varying tones and hues, the star of the show.

Speaking to Vogue, Pica explained the use of the fiery colour:

"Lips are obvious, but with this collection we really wanted to subvert the colour. I love red myself, as did Coco Chanel, and it's the colour your face goes naturally when you flush—it's natural within the skin. It's about playing with texture and tone, and doing something unexpected."

The range consists of six lipsticks, crimson and burgundy versions of Chanel's classic Illusion d'Ombre cream shadows, a blush, two nail polishes, two lip liners, two eyeliners, and an eye shadow quad, as well as that mascara, named Subversif, which is set to be limited edition.

And on that mascara colour, Pica said, "It feels like a shame to finish with a black mascara when you've created this amazing red eye, so it's a way of making all of the elements work together and bringing about a certain mood."

So there you have it: Your new favourite makeup colour is set to be red. The collection is launching on 5 August, so you don't have to wait much longer. But in the meantime, you can shop Chanel's other red polishes here.
