The word universal is funny because often it doesn't really mean something is able to be used by all—we're looking at you, "universal" remotes. This is especially true with makeup: We are all individuals, so shades, tones, textures, and trends all look different on each and every one of us. However, makeup artist Lisa Eldridge seems to have found the most universally flattering makeup look of all: Think smooth skin and defined eyes.
The sculpted eye look should be defined without taking over the rest of the makeup. Eldridge uses a trio of bronze shadows from Maybelline's The Nudes Palette ($10), but she suggests that you use shadow colours that best suit your skin tone. The three shades are blended into the eye socket and then mixed together and swept under the lower lashes to soften the look. The main focus of the look is the eyeliner; Eldridge is all about it. Her secret to creating this universally flattering? Applying a black liner, even if you feel it's too harsh for you, and then buffing it in with one of the eye shadows you've used on your eyes. We love the classic look of Bobbi Brown's Long Wear Gel Eyeliner ($25) in Jet Black—it glides across the lid smoothly and dries in an instant. Eldridge keeps the line thin to keep the shape clean, and wings it out to top off the look.
Don't forget mascara, blush, and your favourite nude lip to pull the look together. We're big fans of Charlotte Tilbury's K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick ($32) in Nude Kate, and you can check out more of our favourites here!
