Has your lipstick ever faded unevenly or flaked away by the end of the day? Have you ever felt that the bright colour just does not seem to suit you quite right? If you answered any or all of these with an “oh, yes,” here are the rules to conquering the statement lip. Whether you’re wearing a hot pink colour one day and a blue lip the next, these are the 10 commandments to swear by for the most colour payoff, the longest wear, and the most of comfort. Arguably, there is nothing worse than wearing a bold lip colour and then having that pigment cling to dry skin or gather in those natural lip lines and creases. A good exfoliation removes the dead outer surface of the lips, improves circulation, and gives you a smooth base to work with. Use either a damp washcloth or a lip exfoliator.
When wearing any pigment-rich lipstick know this: Priming is essential. In fact, whether we’re talking about foundation, eye shadows, or lip colours, what goes underneath is going to determine the staying power.
One of the key steps to mastering that bright lip is by getting as much true-to-tone colour payoff as you can. The secret? Make the base underneath neutral. Apply a light layer of tinted moisturiser or foundation to tone down the natural colour of lips.
Not all shades flatter all skin tones. Know which colours work for you. If you have a cooler skin tone, look to shades with more pinks or blues in them like NYX Matte Lipstick (£7) in Perfect Red. For warmer olive-toned complexions, oranges and pinks look amazing. We recommend Urban Decay’s Revolution Lipstick (£16) in Bang.
If you want a lip liner that works for every lipstick shade imaginable, we suggest a clear lip pencil—it's completely foolproof and will prevent a telltale lip line.
Wearing a bright lip can require some maintenance throughout the day. Keep the upkeep to a minimum by applying a stain of the colour you’re trying to achieve first. The stain ensures that even as your lipstick starts to fade throughout the day the colour will go as evenly as possible.
If you want it to last, layer your lipstick up gradually. Apply, blot with oil blotters or a tissue and reapply. After you are satisfied with the colour, take a thin piece of tissue and, holding it lightly onto your lips, pat a little bit of translucent powder over the top to lock the colour in.
Last application step: Clean up the outline of your lips for a clean and crisp bold lip. Use concealer and a small flat brush to redefine the lip line from any lip color that has gone astray.
Bring balance to a bold lip look with a good dose of volumising black mascara. You'll also want to even out your skin tone with some of that foundation from earlier—a bold lip can often highlight flaws in your complexion.
Now we know that all these commandments ensure that you’re going to get major colour impact that lasts all day, but we still suggest you to bring a tube with you just in case. A caffeine addiction can be unforgiving to even your favourite lipstick.
Finally, our unofficial 11th commandment and, in our opinion, the most important commandment: Thou Shalt Commit and Wear with Confidence. It doesn’t matter what lip colour you choose; how you feel in it is all that matters.
