Actress, designer, Alterna brand ambassador, mum to the adorable Suri—whatever superpower Katie Holmes possesses that allows her to do all of these things while still looking as amazing as she does, we’d like a dose of too, please. Though she’s known for her polished fashion sense (her line Holmes & Yang is full of sleek, structured classics), she’s quite the beauty aficionado too (and not just because she’s been on People’s 100 Most Beautiful List…twice).
We sat down with Holmes and asked her all our pressing hair and makeup questions—including the products you’ll always find in her bag, how she keeps her hair looking so sleek (even in the New York heat!), and the best makeup tip she’s ever learned.

Holmes: I can’t live without the Alterna Caviar Shampoo ($32) and Conditioner ($32). It smells so good and really makes a huge difference in my hair! Especially in the summertime with the humidity of the city, when you don’t want to walk around with frizz everywhere—it’s a lifesaver.
They also have this new product, the [Anti-Aging] Replenishing Milk ($30). You put it in your hair when it’s still wet, then blow dry. It makes it so smooth, it’s almost like giving yourself your own blowout. I use Bobbi Brown products on my face whenever I’m going anywhere—I love her colors. It highlights what’s already there, without making you look like you have a face full of makeup on.
Holmes: I’m either doing my own blowout with [Alterna’s] Replenishing Milk ($30), or I’ll use the Bamboo Volume Spray ($25) if I want to go more natural and keep the curl in, since my hair is naturally wavy. In the summer, I feel like you don’t have to be so structured in your beauty routine. I tend to just do a pony because it’s hot.
I didn’t realize that when you’re tired, it’s all about blush—not necessarily concealer. You have to have color on your cheeks to brighten your skin up—as women, we want to hurry up and conceal the dark circles, but really you have to bring the pink out. I like the pot cream blush that Bobbi Brown makes, and then I put the line’s Shimmer Brick ($42) on top of it to really wake up my complexion.”
Holmes: I have two and they’re both from the Met Ball. I wore a Marchesa dress this year. I’ve never worn a dress that was so big, and so princessy. It was a big experience, and I’m a big fan of Georgina. I liked the color—it was a beautiful color and something I’d never worn before. I also loved the dress I wore last year, which was Calvin Klein. It was white and simple. Both designers were great. Bobbi did my makeup this year, and she’s so good at doing it without looking like there’s too much on, which I prefer.
