First it was Jennifer Hudson, then Rita Ora, and now January Jones has joined the list of stars rocking graphic, unexpected eyeliner on the red carpet. We love the risk-taking approach to makeup that actresses have been embracing as of late, but the best part of this look is that it’s incredibly easy to try at home. We checked in with Rachel Goodwin, the Chanel makeup artist responsible for the eye-catching look, for all the details.

Goodwin skipped blush, choosing to contour Jones’ skin and set her makeup with a pressed powder one shade darker than the actress’ complexion instead. (Check out this how-to to learn where to apply the darker hue.) Goodwin used Chanel’s Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder ($58) in No.20, or try Maybelline’s Fit Me Pressed Powder ($7).
Now comes the fun part! We suggest you use a bright liquid liner to get this look. (Goodwin used a regular kohl liner and a thin brush, but a pen is so much easier for a non-makeup artist.) Try Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($20) in Indigo. Staring n the middle of your eye, slowly build the line, moving up and out. Then, come back in and add a thin line from the inner corner to the middle. (This tutorial will help!)
For “unexpected contrast,” Goodwin reached for Chanel’s Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner ($32) in Or Rose. Draw a thick line of color under your bottom lashline, then gently soften the edges with a small, stiff brush. We like Eco Tools Eye Liner Brush ($4).
Once your color liner is in place, curl your lashes and apply black mascara. We like L’Oreal’s Voluminous Carbon Black Volume Building Mascara ($8).
