We're very excited to announce that Lou and Em, of lifestyle site A Style Album, are the latest contributors to join Byrdie UK! Each month they'll be tackling beauty conundrums that we all regularly face. The duo's USP is cool-girl beauty and how to master real attainable beauty looks and routines, which is why we're so excited that they will be penning a regular column and sharing their beauty knowledge right here with you. This month the duo are tackling their tresses in the quest to repair summer damage…
Hi, Byrdie readers! For our first column we want to discuss post-holiday hair and how to get it back to its best. It seems it's not just our minds suffering from post-holiday blues, but our hair seems to be having a meltdown too. We’ve just returned from a summer spent in Mallorca, and while our skin may be golden brown and glowing, our hair is far from looking its best. Weeks of sun, sea and chlorine have made our follicles frizzy and unpredictable. We can’t get to Tom Smith, our trusted hairstylist and colour director at Billi Currie, quick enough! So, before our salon visit we have been putting some at-home products and treatments to the test to help get our manes shiny and healthy in the meantime. Keep scrolling to find out what worked to restore our hair to its healthy, happy best…
While away, we kept our hair well covered with a trilby. But even so, the sun managed to wreak havoc with our colour. Em's pre-holiday cool, blonde shade went a not-so-cool brassy yellow.
Since arriving home, Em has been using Redken Blonde Idol Shampoo (£11) and Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner (£16) to combat this, and she swears by it. The violet tone neutralises any hints of yellow. The product has literally changed her life!
The sun is kinder to Lou’s colour because Tom kept the base lighter and let the sun do the rest, resulting in a natural, sun-kissed beachy blonde. However, the sea and chlorine took its toll, and extra treatments have been needed since we landed on UK soil.
Kérastase Soleil Masque UV Défense Active Anti-Damage Concentrate (£21) is another hero product of ours. Think of it as an aftersun must-have for your hair. This pot of magic helps to beautify and replenish sun-damaged hair in areas that need it most.
Tom advised us both to pack Oribe Gold Lust Repair & Restore Conditioner (£46)—an ultra-hydrating conditioner that smoothes cuticles and undoes the damage caused. It's perfect to treat the ends of Lou’s locks, which are prone to frizz.
Our hair has a mind of its own when it’s humid, we need some serious help keeping it under control—there is nothing worse than taking the time to blow-dry and style your hair to walk outside and watch it slowly turn into a ball of frizz. Living Proof Satin Hair Serum (£25) helped us combat this, leaving our hair silky smooth.
The Ouai Hair Oil (£24) also helped to smooth out frizz, leaving us with a glossy finish. While we took Tom’s advice and packed plenty of treatment products, he also told us to leave the tongs at home (this didn’t happen!). The oil also protected us from the (extra) heat damage caused by the Babyliss Pro Titanium Expression Curling Tongs (£50) we use daily to help create a natural-looking, beachy wave. It’s a keeper.
Now that we’re back, we’ll be opting for an intense treatment to lock in some much-needed nourishment. Tom says “When your carefully maintained tresses are subjected to days of UV rays, it's the colour and moisture levels that suffer the most.” He recommends Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector or Philip Kingsley Elasticizer (£15). Both are home haircare saviours that will get your hair back on track, perfect for extremely dry, porous and very thirsty hair. Ticks all three boxes!
