It’s a known fact that the hands are one of the first body parts to show signs of ageing. But unlike our faces, where we slather sunscreen, retinol, and all kinds of antioxidants, we leave our hands almost entirely out of the beauty equation. Nobody wants a youthful face only for their age to be given away by granny hands. In order to keep your hands looking youthful before sunspots and other unsightly features attempt to surface, there are a few key steps to take. Keep scrolling to learn how to prevent your hands from ageing!
So you’re not going to wear gloves on a daily basis, Michael Jackson style, but it doesn’t have to be winter for your hands to benefit from them. When doing activities outdoors like gardening, playing golf, or cycling, you can prevent unnecessary aging of your hands by wearing a pair of gloves appropriate to that activity. Just consider it the hand version of your straw hat on the beach! Admittedly a little less chic, but worth it when you’ve got radiant, younger-looking hands for decades to come. Another consideration: If you have a kitchen sink under a window and do dishes there, then wear gloves!
We know it’s hard to part with the long-lasting results of gel manicures, but their harmful effects on your hands are an important con to consider before indulging. The UV light used to lock in that perfect mani is highly concentrated and is invisibly damaging the skin on your hands.
In addition to sunscreen and a moisturizer with an SPF, this remedy takes care of your hands while you sleep. It’s something a dermatologist taught us many years ago to combat dry skin and deeply hydrate: lather on either Aquaphor or Vaseline (though Aquaphor is our personal favorite), and stick your hands in a pair of fuzzy socks (so you don’t get your greasy mitts all over your lines and face/hair). It’s a low-cost, low-maintenance method for making your hands look youthful, and you’ll wake up with the softest hands ever!
