Celebrities have access to the top dermatologists, aestheticians, and makeup artists in the world, so it’s no wonder they look so perfect and otherworldly on the red carpet. While we may not have the salaries and services of the stars, we can still get their signature red-carpet radiance with a few tips and tricks from industry insiders—including the very dermatologist responsible for the radiant complexions of Sienna Miller, Naomi Watts, and Heidi Klum. To get glowing, clearer skin, exfoliating is a must. It sloughs off dead skin cells that are dulling your complexion and preventing your skin from getting the moisture it needs. The consulting dermatologist for L’Oréal Paris, Dr. Gervaise Gerstner, recommends using a Clarisonic Mia Skin Cleansing System ($99) daily—even better if you use it with the brand’s Sonic Radiance Skin Illuminating Cleanser ($25), which is a brightening solution targeted to transform sallow skin. According to dermatologist Dr. David Colbert, the man who gets Naomi Watts, Sienna Miller, and Heidi Klum red-carpet-ready, “Your skin doesn’t look its best if you’re not optimally hydrated. You can’t deliver all of the nutrients your skin needs if you’re dehydrated.” In addition to drinking plenty of water, give skin a hydrating boost with a quenching face mask the night before an event. Don't binge on sugar, carbs, alcohol, caffeine, or salt—all of which can bloat and dehydrate. No one wants puffy or sagging skin, which these foods exacerbate. “If you’re drinking alcohol, it should be really minimal amounts,” adds Colbert.
Colbert’s clients—Watts, Miller, and Klum included—abide by his advice to increase your intake of these five superfoods: kale, Greek yogurt, white fish, olive oil and almonds. “All of these foods are packed with molecules that give you energy and will fortify your skin,” he says. “The yogurt, fish, olive oil, and almonds are packed with the right fats that satiate your appetite, as well as vitamins A and D. And the kale is packed with fiber so you can flush your skin out,” he says. “In the end, if you’re tired and dehydrated and you haven’t eaten, you’re going to look awful,” he says. In other words: Don’t starve yourself; nourish yourself—and your skin will follow suit.
Red carpet-worthy skin needs to be primed to reach its, well, prime appearance. Gerstner recommends wearing Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer ($32) under makeup. The creamy product is infused with coconut water and probiotics to replenish, smooth, and brighten your complexion.
With all of the previous steps, your skin will be glowing. But you want to ensure that no unwanted oil from lights (hello, flashing cameras!) and heat end up making you look greasy. Last but not least, an unlikely tip: Don’t over-exercise. “People who overdo it get the ‘gym-tired’ look,” says Colbert. “Gym face is when you’ve just over-done it. You lost the body fat in your face—your face is sinking, you look tired and old,” he explains. His final words of wisdom: “Everything in moderation.”
