An arm's length of swatches, a perfectly moisturised left hand and a ridiculously perfumed jumper—take it from me, this is the standard issue beauty editor uniform. Our jobs are all about sifting through the latest and greatest beauty launches and testing as many formulas as our faces can take all to give you the most comprehensive report of what's actually worth your money in the beauty world. That's why, if you're looking for a beauty recommendation, asking a beauty editor is a pretty good bet.
But just because we're experts in our field, that doesn't mean we don't love a good recommendation ourselves. In fact, we love a well-researched tip-off from a fellow editor, and more often than not, these referrals end up being the most prized items in our own beauty weaponry too. Below, the Byrdie UK team shares those holy-grail products that entered our lives courtesy of another beauty editor—these come doubly approved.
As recommended by: Sophie Beresiner, beauty director at Elle UK
"Sophie recommended this to me, as it works like Photoshop to smooth and blur out the look of blemishes and even indents in the skin like chicken pox scars. I'm hooked."
As recommended by: Pamela Harris, freelance fashion editor
"Okay, so it wasn't a beauty editor who recommended this to me. When I worked at Women's Health, the acting Fashion Editor at the time, Pamela Harris, had the most amazing complexion. When I complimented her, she told me it was, in part, down to this highlighter that creates a lit-from-within glow that doesn't look fake."
As recommended by: Amy Hopkinson, digital editor at Women's Health
"Amy recommended his probiotic to me. I used it for the full 12-week course and felt more energised, my skin looked better and I now suffer from far less bloating than before (TMI, yes, but well worth knowing)."
As recommended by: Joely Walker, beauty director at Grazia
"When I interned at Elle years ago, Joely (the beauty assistant there at the time) kept a bottle of this perfume on her desk, and every single day, an average of five other Elle staffers would come over for a spritz. Everyone was obsessed. It's so fresh and green, like the olfactory equivalent of drinking a tall glass of icy cucumber-infused water. It's still one of my favourites."
"Sam is one of the most efficient women I know, and her beauty routine is just the same, so I always look to her for shortcuts and products that will save me time, like these insane pre-soaked rose water-infused pads that lift away even mascara without a single bit of rubbing."
As recommended by: Phoebe McDowell, assistant beauty editor at Sunday Times Style
"Phoebe's lashes always look mega, so I knew there must be something pretty special about Benefit's newest mascara. I tried it on her recommendation and love how wet and fluid the formula feels, especially as it dries down to be super feathery and light."
Alyss Bowen, associate social media editor
As recommended by: Amy Lawrenson, editorial director at Byrdie UK
"Amy recommended this to me after I suffered a serious bout of hormonal acne and nothing would calm it down—until this. I don't use it daily, but if I do experience a breakout, it's this moisturiser I turn to. I always have a backup tube handy."
As recommended by: Shannon Peter, deputy editor at Byrdie UK
"Six months of sitting next to Shannon and her dreamy skin will turn a girl to It Cosmetics CC Cream. I'm obsessed with its easy, buildable texture and love how dewy it looks on the skin."
As recommended by: Chemmie Squier, associate creative at Refinery 29
"Way back when, Chemmie recommended Pixi's cult Glow Tonic to me, claiming it was the only thing that helped rid her skin of dull, dry patches and left it glowing. I started using it immediately to exfoliate my skin, and because it's made up of a gentle 5% glycolic acid derived from sugar cane, it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin."
