Rather than let speculation run wild, Gigi Hadid has always been one to take control of the public conversation about her body—whether it's explaining exactly how hard she works to stay in shape or calling out her haters when necessary. So while we're not totally surprised that she's speaking out about her recent weight loss, we were shocked to hear the reasoning behind it.
"My metabolism actually changed like crazy this year," she explains in a recent interview with Elle.com. "I have Hashimoto's disease. It's a thyroid disease, and it's now been two years since taking the medication for it, so for the VS show I didn't want to lose any more weight, I just want to have muscles in the right place, and if my butt can get a little perkier, then that's good."
Hashimoto's is a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid, which is responsible for the regulation of hormones in your body. Our hormones have a direct impact on our metabolism, hence why Hadid's may be out of whack, especially as she adjusts to a new medication. It's actually fairly common—Victoria Justice has the condition, too. And if fans of hers who are dealing with the same condition can find some solidarity? Well, that's why we love how refreshingly honest she is.
While Hashimoto's is a disease that should only be diagnosed by your doctor, a lot of us deal with unruly hormones. Find out which foods and supplements can help you balance them naturally.
