Maybelline has just announced that Gigi Hadid is their newest beauty spokesperson. The fresh-faced young model will be in good company, joining the ranks of Jourdan Dunn and Adriana Lima. “Being a Maybelline New York spokesperson means more to me than anyone can imagine; it doesn’t seem real! It’s the most incredible feeling and is a dream come true,” says Hadid. “I feel so honored and humbled to be a part of the iconic brand I grew up with, and I am very excited by this opportunity.”
Though this is Hadid's first beauty gig, she's no stranger to the modelling scene: At 19, she's already walked the runway for Marc Jacobs, Sonia Rykiel, and Jean Paul Gaultier, as well as shot campaigns for Tom Ford and Guess (plus, Vogue did a video with her, which is always a good sign). But just as strong as her modelling presence? Her social media following: Girlfriend's got 1.4 million Instagram followers, 193,000 Twitter groupies, and a Tumblr blog called SevenAngels that she updates daily.
If you're thinking about another young model/social media star who was just named the face of a giant cosmetics company, you're not wrong (hi, Kendall!). Both of these girls (who also happen to be friends) are beautiful, no doubt, but we sense a trend here. Perhaps this is the dawn of a new era of beauty spokespeople, where accessibility and an engaged following are just as important as their modelling cred. Or maybe Maybelline, like Estée Lauder, is just trying to reach a new audience in the smartest way possible. Either way, we're not complaining.
