Searches for mindfulness have grown by 80% since 2008, and it’s little wonder, really. Cast your minds back a decade to an arguably simpler time when social media wasn’t such a prevalent part of our lives. It’s thought that we now spend two hours a day on social platforms (that’s a mind-boggling 30.4 days a year), yet researchers at the Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C., found that social media induces more stress than it relieves.
In some ways, social media is incredible—it connects people across the globe, and it gives a voice and an outlet to all. On social platforms, we’ve seen small businesses launch, thrive and grow (like Glossier, Nyx and Bleach London, to name a few). But there’s a dark side to our obsession with connecting through a screen. Endlessly scrolling Instagram and Facebook can lead us to compare our own lives to those that are presented to us already heavily edited and filtered.
And at 11 p.m. after a long, stressful, day at work when you’re scrolling on your phone on the sofa too knackered to drag your body to bed, it can be difficult to remember that what most people share online is their best self, not necessarily their true self. As social media has grown, so too have our anxiety levels, and it’s time to say enough. It’s time to reframe the way we use social media and the way we treat ourselves—our minds need to be a little kinder and a little more forgiving.
