Fall is upon us, and just as we manage to update our wardrobe, it’s time for us to refresh our makeup bags as well. Out with the old, in with the new, as the saying goes. This year’s fall makeup trends lend a lot of easy staples to add to your routine, while still keeping your bag slim and portable. Keep scrolling to see how to update your makeup bag for fall!
With the changing of seasons comes the changing of your skin. Our naturally dewy skin may now be plagued with that dry, flaky base that comes with the colder months. Opt for a more moisturizing foundation this season to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Koh Gen Do’s Maifanshi Moisture Foundation ($62) is the perfect fit—it’s lightweight and buildable, and when you remove it at night, your skin will feel like you’ve been wearing a treatment all day.
The biggest change in trends this season is doing away with heavy contour. Instead of your usual bronzy, hollowed cheekbones and sculpted face, go with the beautiful, brisk look of healthy color. Use a pop of blush to achieve the “pinched cheeks on a cold day” look. Hide your contour palettes and add a cream- to- powder blush, like Laura Mercier’s Crème Cheek Colour ($26), in warm peach or rose to your makeup bag this season. The cream texture will also keep your face from feeling too dry.
The easiest and most versatile update to your bag this fall is foolproof, simple black eyeliner. On the fall runways, most artists played around with the versatility of the classic line with smudgy smoky rims and clean and simple barely there lids. L’Oréal Paris’ Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner ($9) is the perfect addition—it has the intense finish of a liquid liner while allowing the precision of a pencil (it’s also easy to smudge and quick to dry).
Rejoice! The red lip is back with a vengeance (as if it ever went out to begin with). Summer had us stocking up on nude lips and glossy balms. This season, the red lip makes its much-anticipated comeback. Find the perfect shade of red and toss it in your bag. I prefer a classic brick shade, like MAC's Lipstick ($17) in Russian Red —not too bright and not too cool.
I am always the first to recommend a matte eye shadow. However, this season I’ve crossed over to the shiny side (along with the rest of the makeup community) to adopt the look of metallic lids. Make this transition easy by choosing one perfect palette to add to your bag. Why not swap out your classic Naked Palette for Urban Decay’s Naked2 ($54), which includes your go-to copper, gold, and bronze shades.
You’ve already made the effort to benefit your skin in your daily makeup routine with the addition of a moisturizing foundation. Take it all the way with my all-time favorite beauty staple and insider secret: Egyptian Magic ($25).
Don’t be afraid of the waxy, petroleum jelly–looking substance. This healing balm has been known to cure dry and textured skin, cracked lips, and even eczema overnight. I actually use this in my bleach and tone hair to keep it shiny, healthy, and moisturized. It’s basically your one-stop beauty shop for this fall. (You can even add a tiny bit to your eye shadow to achieve that grungy greasy look!)
