It’s Finally Here: The Injection That Will Dissolve Your Double Chin

There are certain stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond well to diet and exercise. And by don’t respond well, we mean they remain thoroughly unchanged regardless of the calories you cut and the hours to log at the gym. One area in particular comes to mind, and that’s the spot directly underneath the chin—an area so lovingly dubbed the double chin. Up until yesterday, the only effective solutions for eliminating double chins were surgery or liposuction. Then along came Kybella, an injectable substance that destroys fat cells under the chin.

Kybella is a version of deoxycholic acid, a molecule that naturally occurs in the body to assist in the breakdown of dietary fat. Kybella is injected in a grid pattern (with an average of small 27 injections) directly into the fatty area directly under the chin. The procedure doesn’t take long, only about five minutes, but it may take two or three days to heal from the bruising, swelling, and numbness that can occur after the injections. A patient will come in for up to six treatments, spaced one month apart to see full results.

After years of development, numerous clinical studies, and thousands of satisfied test subjects, the Food and Drug Administration has approved Kybella. Of course, like all drugs, it’s not without its risks—trouble swallowing and nerve damage being the big ones. And don’t expect to see this procedure covered by your insurance. The company that makes Kybella hasn’t released the cost, but we’re expecting a sizable price tag.

One caveat: Kybella doesn’t affect skin laxity. If you have more loose, sagging skin than excess fat, you won’t be a candidate for the procedure. But the good news is today’s neck-firming creams can help with that issue. We particularly love Algenist’s Firming & Lifting Neck Cream ($98) and Perricone MD’s Cold Plasma Sub-D ($135).
