Think there is only one way to apply mascara? Think again. For decades, makeup artists have altered the way they apply mascara to achieve dramatically different effects. Who knew you can create the illusion of a liner flick, a fully loaded set of lashes or a feathery finish depending on the application technique you use? There's a whole world of mascara looks out there, no false lashes required. Just bring your playful attitude, and you'll be good to go.
To give you the inside scoop on how to get more out of your mascara, we've created three summer eye looks with different mascara effects for each. It was also a cunning way for us to put Dior's new Pump 'N' Volume Mascara (£26) to the test. You squeeze the flexible tube to soften the ultra-volumising formula and load the brush with just the right amount of product, and then you apply it any way you'd like.

A summer smoky eye, think taupe and mushroom hues, will take you from day to night. Apply a wash of eye shadow across the upper eyelids, we used Dior 5 Couleurs Colours & Effects Eyeshadow Palette (£45) in 657 Expose. Pay attention, making sure to blend and buff the edges so it looks seamless. Work a mid-tone eye shadow under the lower lashline to give the eyes extra definition.
The Mascara Trick: Curl the top lashes, and then use the Dior Pump 'N' Volume Mascara (£26) wand in a zig-zag motion from root to tip on the upper and lower lashes. For a false-lash effect, apply mascara to the top of your upper lashes, brushing from root to tip to ensure they have a 360-degree coating of product. This will ensure your eyes are the focus of your look.
For a seriously sultry summer look, try a sunset shade on the eyes. The Dior 5 Couleurs Colours & Effects Eyeshadow Palette (£45) in 767 Inflame has a standout terra-cotta hue. Use a small eye shadow brush to create a cat-eye shape by working the shadow into a feline-esque flick that travels up and out.
The Mascara Trick: To really amplify the look, you could apply the Dior Pump 'N' Volume Mascara (£26) with an outward sweeping motion to fan the lashes out. Or, to make your eyes look bigger, apply a couple fine coats of mascara to the top lashes to give them an open, feathery, fluttery effect. To ensure your eyes look super open, apply a small amount of mascara to your lower lashes, just for subtle definition. A slick of Diorshow Khôl (£20) in 529 Beige Khôl drawn along the lower waterline will ensure your eyes look big and beautiful.
For a '60s look that feels modern rather than overly retro, you want to aim for an eye look that's fresh and illuminated. Use the shimmering white eye shadow from the Dior 5 Couleurs Colours & Effects Eyeshadow Palette (£45) in 357 Electrify, and apply it to the inner corners of the eyes and up onto the eyelids.
The Mascara Trick: Focus your Dior Pump 'N' Volume Mascara (£26) application away from the inner corner of the eyes; instead work more product on the middle part of the eye and towards the outer corners to give the illusion of an eyeliner flick. In a V-shape around the outer corners, apply Diorshow Khôl 099 (£20) in Black Khôl to further amplify the illusion of a cat eye flick without the faff of a liquid liner. A slick of Diorshow Khôl (£20) in 009 White Khôl in the lower lashline nods to the '60s and will brighten your eyes so they really pop.
