Perhaps it's the tradition, and rituals mark the season in general, but we tend to gravitate toward classic looks during the holidays: a simple red lip, for example, or an elegant updo. But with so many opportunities to primp on your agenda, why not mix it up with just a tweak or two? Here, we're rounding up fresh spins on some of these go-to getups.
Try a jewel tone like royal blue (pictured). Apply Stargazer Mascara (£3) in blue all over lashes. If you're not sure just apply at the roots - the hint of blue will make brown eyes pop. If you have blue eyes try gold mascara. Green eyes? Plum looks great.
… go minimalist with bobby pins. Whether you're simply clipping your hair out of your face or having fun with different designs, they're an easy (and thrifty!) way to embellish your 'do.
… try it in white. It's such a simple switch that takes the look from retro to modern. Try Stila's Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner (£15) in Snow, and keep the rest of your hair and makeup clean to really let the liner stand out. (Skip mascara, too!)
… try rust or orangey-bronze. We love metallics this time of year, but opt for this color of the moment for a cool spin on a smoky eye (that'll make your irises pop, to boot). It's very Fiona Apple, no? Try Mac Pigment (£16) in Copper Sparkle.
… give it a twist. Try this ponytail-meets-chignon look by securing your hair in a low pony, twisting it all the way down, and tucking the end back up. Slick back flyaways with Moroccanoil's Styling Gel (£12).
… make it graphic. There are plenty of ways to play with this, but we're loving this flattering, simple v shape.
