Working out falls into the “necessary evil” category for multiple reasons. One of which being that it can seriously mess with your skin. But warmer weather is on the horizon and neglecting our gym membership pretty much always does more harm than good. So we talked to skincare expert Indie Lee, who shared her most important tips for keeping your skin clear and healthy before, during, and after a workout.

The products you put in your hair are meant for your hair—not your skin. Keep your hair off of your face—and your back, if you’re prone to breakouts there—to avoid transferring pore-clogging product to your skin. And Lee says there’s another reason to stick with the pony: you have to constantly touch hair that’s down and getting in your way. Which is a big no-no (as you’ll find out shortly).
“Gym towels are often bleached with harsh chemicals that can harm your complexion,” Lee says. “Bring your own towels washed with a natural detergent to prevent breakouts and skin sensitivities when wiping away sweat.” Also, be cognizant of where you’re putting your towel. Dabbing your face with a towel that’s been resting on the arm of the treadmill is not what you want to do. Buy a towel with a logo or some sort of writing on it. Every time you set it down, be sure that logo is facing up. That way you’ll always dab your face with the same side, and not the germy gym equipment side.
