We are incredibly excited to welcome Clean Eating Alice as our new wellness columnist. The personal trainer, foodie Instagrammer and best-selling author is a true inspiration to women across the world. She shows that through balanced eating and a great can-do attitude toward working out, women can achieve anything they put their minds to. So we thought who better to talk all things health and fitness than Alice? Each month, Alice will be sharing her favourite new and existing fitness, foodie and inspirational finds, whether that's a new book she's engrossed in or a fitness tip that's helped her training reach the next level. So without further ado, over to you, Alice.
Firstly, I’d like to say hello—welcome to my new column! I am truly honoured to be writing for Byrdie UK, and I hope you all enjoy this exciting outlet I’ve been given to share with you some of my favourite things each month. Keep scrolling to find out what’s been on my radar recently.
My Foodie Find
This month I am loving Pachamama, which is situated on Thayer Street in Marylebone. It’s a Peruvian-inspired bar and restaurant with a cool, relaxed vibe that doesn’t feel too pretentious. The menu is split into land, sea and soil, which I loved, and is the sharing-plates format that is so popular nowadays. I have to say, every dish that we tried was full of flavour and presented exquisitely, and there wasn’t one dish we chose that we didn’t enjoy. My recommendations are the Galician octopus and the fried aubergine, and for dessert, you must try the chilli chocolate truffles (pictured).
My Favourite Fitness Tip
I’ve long been one of those girls who thought a good sports bra equated to one that simply squashed my boobs flat to my chest and kept them in place during my workout. Since working with Triumph Lingerie, I was, for the first time in my life, properly fitted for a sports bra, and I can’t tell you how much it has improved my training. Poor breast support can lead to poor posture during your training, which can massively place your back and other areas at risk of injury. So this month, try binning those old, less-than-effective sports bras and realise the importance of good support in the gym! My pick is the Magic Motion Push-Up (£36) from the Triaction range.
What I've Been Reading
This month I have been loving Dr. Kelly Starrett's Becoming a Supple Leopard (£40). This book is a bible on mobility and movement—something I am personally really interested in—and for fitness professionals or anyone interested in movement and how to improve your own movement, then this book is a must-have! It is a big read, but I would say it is well worth it, and something you can always refer back to too!
Who's Inspired Me
I find Instagram and social media in general are such wonderful places for inspiration, so it was really difficult to select just one person who has completely inspired me this month. However, I think Amy Hopkinson (@wellness_ed) has to be up there. Amy is the online editor at Women’s Health, an already challenging job in itself, but what I find truly inspiring about Amy is her constant desire to achieve so much more than just her day job each week.
Not only is she currently studying to be a fully qualified PT, but she has also launched her hugely successful and inspiring event, The Wellness Mindset, which takes place each month, and continues to work incredibly hard on her own fitness journey under the guidance of her trainer Luke Worthington (@lukewtraining). On top of all that, Amy manages to find time to just be normal too, with documented downtime that I find totally relatable. For this reason, she is my crush of the month, and someone you should all be following!
Quote of the Month
To wrap it up, I want to impart on you some words of wisdom each month that have helped me in my own busy life. Often these sayings can go in one ear and out the other, but if I find one I like, I try and actively write it down and use it as a mantra when the going gets tough. This month has been one of trials and errors with my training, as I embarked on a new programme and am recovering from a niggly injury, and for this reason, my saying of the month is…
Never a failure, always a lesson.
Tune in next month to find out what I’ve been loving, and I hope you’ve all enjoyed my first installment!
