Brown lipstick has been making a comeback for a while now. Of course, the trend for a coffee-coloured pout started back in the '90s with the likes of Friends star Jennifer Aniston (who wore MAC Lipstick in Paramount, £17) and, well, all the supermodels. Unlike many trends that make a comeback, this incarnation hasn't strayed too much from the original look.
As in the '90s, when it comes to texture now, anything goes—Olivia Palermo, Katie Holmes and Ashley Benson favour a glossy finish, which is slightly more wearable. At the other end of the texture spectrum, Kylie Jenner and Little Mix's Jade Thirwall go matte—you may think this is the new take but Drew Barrymore was rocking the exact same shine-free look when these girls were in nappies. The same versatile approach is being taken with the shades too—the nude browns have a more Kardashian/Jenner-esque feel, while the richer, warmer shades can look edgier, verging on gothic. We predict this trend isn't going anywhere so scroll down and take your cue from the seven celebs who got the brown lipstick look oh, so right this year.
Demi is channelling '90s minimalism here with a blusher-free complexion. The focus is all on the lips and her false lashes. Get the look with Nyx Matte Lipstick (£7) in Spirit.
A gallery about brown lipstick wouldn't be right without including Kylie Jenner who one-handedly spearheaded this trend. Luckily you can re-create this true brown lip look with MAC Lipstick (£16) in Film Noir because who can get their hands on her Lip Kits right now? (Answer: no one).
Katie has gone for a totally wearable, everyday shade of brown that verges more on the nude than the chocolate. Clarins Rouge Eclat Lipstick (£20) in Chestnut Brown gives that pretty sheen and hint of colour.
Jade is rocking a super-matte texture here, which allows her standout smoky eye to take centre stage. Re-create the look with Topshop Lips (£8) in Boardroom.
Ashley Benson's lip is verging on gothic, especially with the tobacco-hued wash of colour over her eyelids and that slick parting. Try this dark terracotta brown with Illamasqua Lipstick (£18) in Howl.
Want to emulate the queen of understated yet polished glam? You can get Olivia's exact look with the Satin Kiss lipstick (£19) in Praline that she created for Ciaté.
