If you want something done right, sometimes you've got to do it yourself. That's the stance the following celebrities take with their makeup. Even though they have access to some of the best makeup artists in Hollywood, these lovely ladies often fly solo when it comes to getting dolled up.
Yes, these actresses have been known to swipe their own lipstick and even (gasp!) paint on their own eyeliner. But you'd never know it from looking at them. Surprised? So were we.

Sophia Bush is no stranger to getting red carpet ready without the help of a professional, even when her schedule gets hectic. Her makeup artist, Jane Cohen, spills: "I do Sophia's makeup very often, but...when she has a lot of red carpet [events] to do, she does her own makeup."

Bride-to-be Lauren Conrad is just as well known for her precise cat eye as she is for her effortless, adorable Instagram snaps. What makes it all the more enviable is that she's mastered those precise wings without needing a professional makeup artist to step in.
And as for her signature blonde locks? She told us exactly how she gets them to stay so perfect all day.
Whether she's telling us her go-to red carpet makeup picks or eschewing the virtues of wearing both a bright lip and a smoky eye, it's clear that Shameless actress Emmy Rossum knows a thing or two about makeup.
And how did she get her makeup application skills down pat? She tells Glamour: "I feel like I learned it from YouTube tutorials. Just trial and error. I would sit at home and Google 'How-to smoky eye.' And try it, and it would be a disaster, and I’d be like “Why do I have sparkles on my nose?”
We're not sure we'd recognize Taylor Swift without her signature red lip. Since she wears it every. single. day. she must have some great tips up her dainty, retro sleeves. "I swipe on my lipstick, place a tissue between my lips, and blot," she told Redbook magazine. "Then, if I really need the color to last, I hold the tissue against my mouth and brush translucent powder over it, which sets the color."

The blonde bombshell famously styles her outfits for many red carpet events, but in a shocking twist, all that perfectly applied lipstick and eyeliner is often her doing as well. "I like to do my own hair and makeup for events," she told The Cut. "I think it's fun." And, adding another layer of injustice to it all, she doesn't even rely on YouTube makeup tutorials like the rest of us—she prefers to use the site to watch dog videos instead. Though, we can't say we really blame her.

Ashley Madekwe may be giving Taylor Swift a run for her money in the DIY bright red lip department. The actress took to her Instagram earlier in the year to show off her handiwork for a pre-Golden Globes party—sans any help from her go-to makeup artist, Allan Alvendaño. (P.S. that gorgeous lip color is Nars' Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil ($25) in Dragon Girl—Miss Swift is also a fan of the shade.)

When Yahoo Beauty asked songstress Shakira why she always does her own makeup, even though she has access to some of the best artists in the business, her reply was short and to the point: "Because I'm good. I'm cheap. I'm fast." Can't argue with that logic.
