In a 2007 study from the International Journal of Dermatology, men’s hair follicles were treated with different levels of testosterone and caffeine. Scientists found that caffeine led to a significant stimulation of hair follicle growth.
More recently, scientists in Germany who treated weakened hair follicles from both male and female scalps with a caffeinated solution found that hair growth increased by 25 percent. That’s no small number when it comes to bulking up thinning hair on your head. It is thought that caffeine stimulates a growth factor that prevents hair follicle cells from dying or going into a state of inactivity. What’s more, women’s hair follicles were more receptive to the growth-boosting effects of caffeine than men’s.
In Europe, a specially formulated treatment with the optimal amount of caffeine, called Plantur 39 Caffeine Treatment, is available, however it hasn’t yet hit the U.S. market.
