Happy birthday, Blake Lively! The actress and lifestyle guru turns 28 years young today, and after seeing what this past year brought—baby! Preserve!—we can only imagine what the next one holds. But numerous other accomplishments aside, we also can't get enough of Lively's signature golden locks—which is why we thought we'd take this moment to look back at her most covetable hair looks. Keep scrolling to see the actress's very best hairstyles throughout the years.
Channeling Veronica Lake is something Lively does a lot, and it's easy to see why: Old-school Hollywood glamour clearly suits her, as seen on the red carpet at the Met Gala in 2014. Getting those quintessential waves does require some skill with a curling iron, but your real secret weapon is a shine spray that won't muss up your 'do. Try Aveda's Brilliant Medium Hold Shine Spray ($21).
In one of her first public appearances after giving birth to daughter James, the actress attended the Gabriela Cadena runway presentation at New York Fashion Week in February, sporting a hairstyle that takes minimal effort but still looks hot—perfect for a new mom! It's as simple as tousling in Oribe's Dry Texturizing Spray ($42) right after blow drying or flat ironing.
Another Lively go-to: the red carpet braid. This one, which she donned at the Grace of Monaco premiere at Cannes in 2014, was high and dramatic—but so easy to mimic. Just tie your hair into a high pony, braid it, and secure it at the bottom. Finish by liberally spraying Sachajuan's Strong Hold Hair Spray ($30) around your crown and slicking flyaways back toward the braid.
For another Cannes 2014 premiere, Lively paid homage to Grace Kelly with a perfectly coiffed bun that would do the late princess proud.
Here's another nod to Veronica—this time, at the premiere of Savages in 2012. The difference, however, is that rather than leaving Lively's curls ultra-defined, her stylist brushed them out. It's a subtle change that adds a different kind of drama.
Sorry, Blair Waldorf: At the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards, Lively copped her old frenemy's go-to hair accessory, and it looked good. Headbands are big for fall, so why not follow the actress's lead?
Lest we forget Lively's California roots, we had to give a nod to the beachy waves she does so well. Spray on Herbivore Botanicals' Sea Mist ($20) to get the same tousled look.
We're so used to seeing her with curls or waves that sometimes we forget that Lively can do sleek like no one's business. (Shocking!) To nab the glossy look seen at the Gucci S/S 14 presentation, work in R+Co's Tinsel Smoothing Oil ($24) before drying and straightening.
This mega-fishtail, seen at the New York premiere of Savages in 2012, will go down in history as one of our all-time favorite Lively looks. Why? It's simple enough, yet the texture adds a little something without being over-the-top messy. If the fishtail scares you, you're not alone: Check out this faux version we created.
One of our favorite variations on Lively's signature waves is a half-back 'do. (And, psst: It's great for those pesky, in-between bangs.) It's easy, too: Just grab a chunk of face-framing hair on each side, pull it back, and fasten with bobby pins.
For the punk-themed Met Gala in 2013, Lively's tricked-out pony struck the perfect balance between her classic red carpet style and a little bit of edge. To get the look, start with a half ponytail and fasten it back. Gather half of the rest of your hair, combine it with the ponytail, and fasten it in the middle of the back of your head. Then, gather the rest of your hair, combine it into the ponytail, and tie it all at the nape of your neck. Add one more tie halfway down the ponytail, et voilà!
