Lip powder is a brand-new category in the world of makeup. It mimics an age-old makeup artist trick of tapping blusher over lips to create a soft-focus texture. It looks pretty and romantic. It’s wearable too. For anyone who likes the idea of a matte lipstick but finds them too drying, lip powder could be the answer. You get the matte finish, but in a light-as-air formula that doesn’t cake or flake.
It does still feel a little drying, but not quite as much as some of the matte lipstick formulas I've road-tested over the years. You'll also find these lip products in a variety of shades, from vivid hot pinks to subtle terra-cottas, so there's a hue to suit everyone. As for the delivery, lip powders come in plenty of different formats, from sponge-tipped applicators to palettes. Shop our favourites below.
Contained within this chic palette is a lip balm and powder. Apply the balm first using the brush, and then tap on the powder with the sponge applicator to create a pretty stained lip effect that doesn't feel dry.
Clinique's version comes with a sponge applicator and the colour housed in the lid. The pigment creates a long-lasting weightless stain on the lips. It comes in eight shades, from vivid reds, oranges and pinks to more neutral hues.
Housed in a tube, this liquid-to-powder formula is squeezed out and applied via the sponge tip. Considering the price, this can rival the more expensive versions for colour payoff, texture and longevity. Great if you're not totally convinced by the idea of lip powders.
A powder to liquid version, the pigment-rich powder bursts on contact with the skin to create a cooling liquid on the lips that dries to a long-lasting soft matte finish that won't leave lips parched.
Another powder-to-liquid formula, this offers a long-lasting stain on the lips. It comes in four shades, but this terra-cotta '90s brown colour is a Byrdie favourite.
