We love a good makeover as much as the next girl, but there’s something about a makeunder that grabs our attention even more. We’ve seen some truly stunning transformations this year (ahem, Nicki Minaj), and we think they’re worth spotlighting. Not saying that “no makeup makeup” should always be the ideal (we have strong feelings about that), but sometimes it’s nice to see a face under all the makeup—just saying. Keep scrolling for seven celebrity makeunders that prove sometimes, less (makeup) is more (compelling).
Who can forget Olivia Wilde’s bleach blonde hair and thin, arched eyebrows when she burst on the scene with a guest role on The O.C. in 2004?
We love Wilde’s current beauty look: soft, auburn locks, natural brows, and glowing skin.
Nicki Minaj made a name for herself with rapid-fire lyrics and a rainbow-hued, out-there signature beauty look.
We think the world collectively gasped when Minaj arrived at The Other Woman premiere this year with barely-there makeup and no rainbow wig in sight.
Angelina Jolie back in the day favored big hair and super-dramatic eye makeup.
We’re not saying Angie can’t rock a mean smoky eye on the red carpet, but we love the natural, toned-down look she’s been opting for lately.
Remember when Taylor Swift was a budding young country singer with a head full of cascading golden ringlets?
Today, Swift prefers a softer, more natural hair look and has even perfected the art of toning down a red lip for daytime.
Kesha’s half-rapping singing was the anthem to many a night on the town (but no, we never brushed our teeth with a bottle of jack).
Though her hair is pink, her makeup is decidedly more toned down—we love this look.
Barrymore rocks a silvery, metallic eye and berry lipstick well…
…but we prefer this warmer, softer look on the Flower beauty founder.
Upton has perfected the art of being an utter bombshell, clearly.
But even bombshells can be subtle; Upton traded her platinum hair and intense eye shadow for a more neutral palette this year.
