Body oil is one of those things that so many of us write off as an “added extra.” The thought of spending a good 10 minutes massaging the stuff into your limbs post-shower just isn’t appealing when breakfast is awaiting you. Plus, there’s the added issue of hanging around in a cold bathroom. So more often or not, our bottles of glimmering oil lie neglected at the back of the bathroom cabinet, brought out only for special occasions.
But trust me—there are so many benefits to a regular slathering of body oil. Body lotion is great for rebooting dehydrated skin, but nothing will give the front of shins and the back of arms that flattering sheen quite like a handful of golden oil. Plus, so many formulas now come infused with clever skincare ingredients that won’t just nourish the skin, but they can exfoliate away any rough patches and even out skin tone, too.
But for me, the thing that keeps me coming back for more is that every time I pour a dollop into my hand and start swiping across my legs, I feel so decadent. It’s got to be one of the fanciest beauty products around.
I swear by the stuff, but there are only a handful of bottles I would buy shares in—I’m pretty particular. Keep scrolling for the five best body oils I keep on constant rotation.
As well as a super-rich blend of plant oils, Votary’s formula contains salicylic acid, an exfoliating ingredient that will nibble away at the top layer of dead skin cells. It’ll get rid of that “chicken skin” on the back of your arms as well as any rough patches of dry skin, and the golden shade gives skin an instant bronze sheen. I never go bare-legged without it.
Multiuse products are my jam, and Sevin’s oil is light enough that you can use it in hair without it going greasy—frizzy ends stand no chance. It smells like sunshine on hot sand.
It’s the real OG body oil, and it’s quite frankly incredible. It’s a dry oil so has that slightly weird texture between the fingertips, but it does not go greasy, no matter how much you apply. I’d bathe in the stuff if I could.
When you put on MOA’s body oil, it feels like you’re walking through a herb garden. There’s lemongrass (a natural antibacterial) as well as marjoram, which makes for a pretty bracing start to the morning. It will also kick-start circulation that’s vital to maintaining healthy, nourished skin.
Vitamin E is one of the most powerful skin healers, making it great if you have any irritated patches. It’ll also improve elasticity, so skin will look plumper and bouncier than ever.
