Taylor Schilling, the Golden Globe-nominated star of Netflix’s hit show, Orange is the New Black, channeled the '70s in her emerald green slip dress from Thakoon at last night’s ceremony in Los Angeles. We got the behind the scenes scoop from her glam squad—hairstylist Ryan Trygstad and makeup artist Monika Blunder—above.
Schilling might have started out with freshly washed hair and workout clothes, but her team quickly transformed her into a bombshell. “The ‘70s-inspired slip dress was a cross between Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Veronica Lake,” says Blunder. “So we wanted to keep the makeup very soft.”
Trygstad, pictured above with Schilling, set out to create hair that was soft but big, and “not too stylized.”
Before using a 1-inch curling iron to create a loose wave, Trygstad worked Leonor Greyl Laque Souple ($36) into Schilling’s locks. “I kept the ends straight and used the Lacque Souple again to set the entire look,” says Trygstad. “The hairspray is really light which we liked because we wanted to keep her hair touchable.”
Blunder used Chantecaille’s Eye Shade ($11) in Crystal on Schilling’s eyelids, Sel in the crease, and Perle on the brow bone. They tried a nude lip before settling on a berry stain. “I wanted it to look like it had a natural bitten flush, almost like she’d been eating a while and some of the pigment’s rubbed off. So she used her pointer finger to push Lip Chic ($35) in Calla Lily onto the lip without a brush.
The last step before heading out the door? Shoes! Schilling showed off her dark red manicure, Essie’s Berry Naughty ($9), while strapping on her strappy silver sandals.
