Use This Makeup Artist Trick To Get Glowing Skin Instantly
On our recent photo shoot with Zoey Deutch (that showcased three must-try hairstyles using only three bobby pins), we found ourselves loving the hair, naturally, but also mesmerised by Deutch’s super glowy skin. We couldn’t let the makeup artist on set, Andre Sarmiento, leave before we got all of the details. Thankfully, he was more than willing to open his bag of tricks and share his perfect skin secrets.
For a complexion that needs a little pick-me-up to look its best, no ordinary moisturizer will do—Sarmiento prefers to prep with a customised cocktail. His recipe for soothing stressed out skin begins with an aloe vera gel to calm any inflammation and help the skin to be less reactive (which is ideal prior to makeup application). Then, he mixes in a hydrating cream to balance dry spots and really bring skin back to life. Finally, for the last boost of hydration, Sarmiento says to add your favourite basic moisturizer that’s specific to your skin type. He recommends using one with antioxidants and calming ingredients, like grapefruit.

The Finishing Touch
But good skincare can only go so far. To nail that naturally sun-kissed look, Sarmiento filled us on it the bronzer combo he swears works on everyone—even the porcelain complexion beauties. First, create a subtle bronze base by buffing Chanel’s Soleil Tan De Chanel Makeup Base ($48) all over the cheek area. “It has a slight sheen, and it gives you sculpting and bronzing at the same time,” Sarmiento says. Then, go in with the powder bronzer Sarmiento says he uses on all skin tones: Benefit’s Cosmetics’ Hoola ($28). “The reason why it’s a great contour color and why it works on so many people is that it doesn’t have any red in it,” Sarmiento says. Fair-skinned ladies, don’t be intimidated by the color—Sarmiento gave us the key for applying it. “Use a super soft brush to diffuse the color.” That way, you can blend it out until it almost disappears into your skin, or build it up, if you’re more of the bronzed goddess type.
