These Photos Show What Losing 110 Pounds REALLY Looks Like

In the beauty industry, we talk a lot about positive, healthy body image and everything we can do to achieve it—from the right foods to eat to fuel your day (The Clean Eating Cookbook & Diet$10, will give you plenty of ideas) to workout moves to tone up and give you a Beyoncé booty. It’s easy to dole out advice on the right things to do, but very rarely, however, is there discussion about what it’s actually like to follow those steps and lose a bunch of weight quickly—the aftermath, the emotional process, how your body changes, and all the not-so-perfect stuff in between. That’s why we’re so inspired by this personal essay by writer and performer Elna Baker, who penned a story titled “What Losing 110 Pounds REALLY Looks Like” for Refinery29. In it, she talks about her weight loss process and how she went from weighing 265 pounds to losing 110 of them by changing her diet. The end result, she recalls, was nothing like the “after” photos you see on billboards. Instead, Baker says that after she lost the weight, she “had so much extra skin that I could lay on my side and pull it a half-foot in either direction.” Thus, she turned to surgery—but even that wasn’t a magical solution. In the end, she’s completely honest: She admits that she’s still working on healing—physically and emotionally—and loving herself, because she’s “so sick of striving for f*cking beauty.” This is a powerful read, and the accompanying photos perfectly show her emotions before and after her multiple procedures.
