Do you leave a colourful bowl of fruit out on your kitchen counter for aesthetic reasons? Chances are you weigh less than those who don't, according to a fascinating new study.
Researchers at Cornell found that of 500 women surveyed, those who kept bowls of fruit out in plain view weighed, on average, 13 pounds less than those who had anything else on display. In fact, fruit was the only object associated with a lower BMI—even toasters were associated with a slightly higher weight.
But the scientists concluded that the countertop items most associated with weight gain were what you would probably expect: Candy, for example, as well as cereal and soda were big culprits. And the reasoning behind all of this is likely a question of willpower—if there's a snack out and ready for grabbing, you're probably going to be tempted to munch.
Your solution is simple: out of sight, out of mind. Either keep the junkier food tucked away or store it in plastic bins so it requires more of an effort to dig in. And fill up that fruit bowl! It might be the first décor choice ever scientifically proven to make you lose weight.
