The Über-'90s Hair Trend That's Totally Making a Comeback

Elinor Block

There's been a change of late in the beauty world—it's getting all nostalgic on us. First, we had the return of '80s blue eye shadow, and then it was time for brown lipstick to make its comeback. Now the clock is being turned back on our hair, as the short micro-fringe has made its return.

We first spotted it on the A/W 16 catwalks at Bottega Veneta, Alexander Wang and Roberto Cavalli, but then the A-listers swiftly adopted this retro look with the likes of Michelle Williams (one of our true beauty and fashion inspirations) following suit. Even more recently, Star Trek Beyond beauty Sofia Boutella and Emily Ratajkowski have been seen sporting the look.

Of course, the short fringe trend was first seen on '90s stars such as Gwen Stefani and Winona Ryder. It was so popular, in fact, that it continued into the '00s with Calista Flockhart reaching for the scissors too. Many of us tried this look at home with failed attempts (NB: Do NOT attempt this look if you have curly hair and no straighteners), but 2016's new version will definitely sway us.

Keep scrolling for a look back at the past trend, what it looks like now, and how you can re-create it.

What do you think of the short fringe? Will you be trying this microtrend? Tell us in the comments!
