It’s probably safe to say that if you’re a runner, you’re a smart cookie. You’re getting your exercise, taking care of your body, and staying healthy—all good choices. However, a new study from the University of Kansas reveals that running actually physically changes your brain too.
In the study, researchers examined the brains and muscles of five endurance athletes, five weightlifters, and five nonactive individuals, setting up sensors to monitor the muscle fibres in their quads. The results were rather surprising; turns out the runners’ muscles responded significantly more rapidly to the brain than those of the other two groups.
Here’s what you can take away from the study: Running increases the brain’s connection to the body. Because of this, researchers theorised that runners could have better agility, faster reaction times, and better coordination. Looks like we need to go dig out our running shoes!
