When it comes to beauty, the mobile app market does not disappoint. You can try on virtual nail polish, create a personalised diet plan, learn how to erase dark circles in a pinch, and even track your sleep cycles. Here are a dozen of our favourite apps, each of which will make your life just a little bit easier.
The Facebook of hair, Bangstyle has created this image-packed app to let you “stalk” stylists to add your feed for a constant stream of inspiration—from editorial, runway, and real life. (You can also upload pics of your own ‘do.)
Try on polish virtually with China Glaze's simple app that lets you adjust for nail length and skin tone. Inspired by your favorite metallic clutch or worn chambray? Snap a pic and the app will suggest the perfect shade to match.
If you have trouble choosing new products, Primp—Pretty in My Pocket, is a user-driven beauty community that can give you a hand. Scan products for recommendations, reviews, and discounts. And if you’re wandering virtually, just add your favorite products to your “makeup bag” or buy through the app (they send you to a third-party site to complete the purchase).
My Skin makes it easy to revamp your skin care regimen from the comfort of your couch—hey, lazy people deserve a glowy visage, too! Fill out a five-minute assessment for product recs that range in price from drugstore brands to high end. Then compare notes and intel with other users who have similar skin types.
Based on your style and your mood, Make Up For Ever’s Pocket Studio will suggest a beauty closet full of makeup secrets, recommendations, and how-tos at your fingertips. Scroll through inspiration videos and step-by-step instructions, adding products to “My Favorites” so you can recreate the look yourself! (Tired Eyes? Hyperpigmentation? No problem. Choose “SOS” for quick fix video solutions.)
Clue provides the same great info as most of the good period tracking apps on the market—projected fertility dates, flow, moods—without all the pastel pink. (We’re partial to the “cloudy weather” graphic predicting PMS.)
A pedometer app that tracks your daily steps, Move recognizes walking, running, and cycling by uploading sensor and GPS info to its servers. (Of course, it has to be on your person to work.) Then it gives you a nifty-looking “storyline” mapping out your physical day. Note: the info’s slightly less accurate when you’re on a treadmill or an elliptical.
If we know anything, it’s that the calories you take in should equal the calories you work out. So consider this app your new best friend: Lose It allows you to create your own personal weight loss plan and tracks your progress, breaking down everything from nutritional value to calories burned through exercising. If you need support, Lose It! has a solid community offering plenty of pats on the back.
Wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? Maybe it’s not how you slept but how you were awakened—Sleep Cycle can help. Just place your smartphone next to your pillow (underneath your fitted sheet), choose your wake-up time, and after gathering five nights of info (tossing, turning, and the like), the app will rate your sleep quality and give you a good morning nudge commensurate with your best sleep state.
Miranda Kerr’s a fan of Squats, a winning app for travelers who want to shake their rump (and legs, abs, glutes, quads, pecs…) and don’t have the time to get to a class or leave their hotel room. Just click on a squats routine—they get increasingly harder over the course of the ten week program—and follow the instructions, from stretch to cooldown.
