While no one denies the fact that the Mediterranean diet is incredible for your health, a new study has revealed that it's even more important for our well-being than we had previously thought, with the report suggesting that it could save nearly 20,000 lives in the UK every year.

Conducted by the Medical Research Council epidemiology unit at the University of Cambridge, lead author Nita Forouhi, MD, said that "3.9% of all new cardiovascular disease cases or 12.5% of cardiovascular deaths in our UK-based study population could potentially be avoided if this population increased their adherence to the Mediterranean diet".

This means that out of the 155,000 cardiovascular deaths that occur every year, 19,000 of them could be avoided with a change in lifestyle and an adherence to the Mediterranean diet in particular.

Earlier this year, there was a review of a whopping 53 studies from over the past 50 years that have researched the Mediterranean diet and the benefits of following it.

According to the review, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, following a Mediterranean diet, which includes foods high in monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, fish and avocado, reduces your chance of developing various health problems. Breast cancer, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular events were proven to be reduced in those who strictly followed the diet.
