The Trick to Margot Robbie’s Cool-Girl Half-Bun

Faith Xue

A perfectly executed bun is a powerful thing. Case in point: Jared Leto’s show-stealing man-bun, which will forever go down in "hair-story" as the bun that launched a thousand copycats (male and female alike). Thus, when you see a powerful and perfect bun, you take notice—which is why we were immediately drawn to Margot Robbie’s cooler-than-thou half-bun at the premier of Z for Zachariah during this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The perfect amount of undone-yet-polished, it gave us the strong urge to swear off our boring ponies and #basic bedhead for good.

The secret to Robbie’s half-textured, half-shiny locks? A product cocktail, courtesy of hairstylist Christopher Naselli. He mixed Leonor Greyl’s light styling cream, Éclat Naturel ($46), with the brand’s wet-looking style gel, Gel À l’Hibiscus ($35), and applied a generous amount to the sides and top of her hair, while combing upwards and backwards. The result? “A structured yet soft feel,” Naselli says. Once the volume was set, he gathered her strands into a mini topknot and secured it in place with just two bobby pins. Paired with candlelit skin and a touch of taupe eye shadow (thanks to makeup artist Kira Nasrat), this look is being filed away as inspo for our next snow outing (or, like, any outing).
