Only apply skincare to problem areas:
“For long-lasting makeup results, preparation is key,” says Jamie Coombes, Dior national makeup artist.
“Don't overwork the skin by massaging layers of serums, creams and primers. Understand your skin first by recognising your problem areas and apply your skincare only where it is needed.”
Beware of over-moisturising the T-zone:
“We tend to be oiler in the centre panel of the face or the ‘T-zone,’ so apply less product here by lightly pressing a serum or lightweight moisturiser into the skin using the fingertips,” recommends Coombes. “This way the skin will absorb it, but without over-stimulating the sebum glands. If you have dry patches, apply your richer creams in those areas only.”
Swap your moisturiser for serum:
“Strip back your layers of skincare and opt for an intense serum instead under your makeup,” says NARS Stylist Anna Priadka. “This way you will get all your skincare benefits, but miss an emollient-rich layer that can make your makeup slide and disappear quicker. Serums are lighter, quickly absorbed and won’t disrupt your makeup as much.”
For special occasions, Byrdie UK's editorial director Amy Lawrenson forgoes moisturiser entirely using Smashbox's Photo Finish Hydrating Foundation Primer (£28) alone under her foundation instead.
Apply your powder BEFORE your foundation:
“To secure your makeup in place while keeping it radiant and glowing, I like to first prime the skin with Touché Eclat Blur Primer (£30), then apply a layer of loose powder directly over and BEFORE the application of liquid foundation,” says YSL makeup artist and National Face Designer Fred Letailleur.
“The loose powder will merge more efficiently into the foundation and create a setting base that will become invisible.”
Then layer your moisturiser on top:
“To recover extra radiance from the complexion, I will then delicately dab a little [moisturiser] over the foundation to re-inject some radiance,” says Letailleur. “This technique will create a secured base that will last all day without any problems while allowing you to build extra fluid products on top like your [under-eye concealer] or cream blush like Kiss & Blush (£29).”
Get the best brushes for the job:
“Make sure you are using a natural brush to buff your complexion product in,” says NARS’ Anna Priadka. “Synthetic brushes apply the product so it sits on the surface of the skin and disappears quicker—natural brushes buff the product deeper, resulting in a longer lasting finish.”

Treat dry skin overnight:
“Finally, if your skin is super dehydrated, use richer creams at night when the skin is resting,” says Coombes. “You'll then wake up to a hydrated, smooth, fresh complexion that is perfectly prepped for a long lasting makeup result.” Try Dior Capture Totale Intensive Night Cream (£135).
