Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren Spill on Makeup and Ageing
Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda have carved out incredible careers on the big screen, small screen and stage (Fonda in Netflix’s Grace & Frankie is a recent highlight). As they’re both in their 70s—Mirren is 72, and Fonda is 79—and still producing hits, there is clearly no sign of them retiring; in fact, Fonda did break from the limelight in the early ’90s before a role in Monster-in-Law alongside Jennifer Lopez lured her back. But it’s not just a talent for acting that these women have in common. Both look incredible and seem to be defying the ageing process, which is surely why L’Oréal Paris signed them on as ambassadors. So what are their beauty secrets? Keep scrolling to find out…
When it comes to makeup, both Mirren and Fonda take a less-is-more approach: “Don’t overdo it, not too much,” advises Mirren. Fonda does admit that concealer under her eyes is a makeup trick she swears by, and Mirren doesn’t shy away from eye makeup either: “Mascara is every woman’s best friend.”
In fact, Mirren is a self-confessed “makeupista”: “I am very used to putting makeup on, and I actually love doing my own makeup. I love sitting down in front of my huge blow-up mirror and putting on my makeup.
“A tip for putting on makeup is to always look at yourself from a distance and keep referring to the distance that most people would be looking at you, because sometimes you can get too obsessed with the detail when you look too close,” she says.
Makeup is the one thing that isn’t too expensive to buy and can immediately make you feel better.
Are there different makeup rules one should follow as they age? Fonda thinks so: “No shine” is one, she says. “Older skin should not glisten.”
Fonda really does appear to be ageing in reverse. “The fact that I am nearly 80 and I still look good for my age gives a woman hope,” she says. When it comes to maturing, Fonda has this advice: “The most important thing is … your attitude, how you feel. Is there love in your life? Are you good in your skin? All of this will make you feel and look younger.”
Earlier this year, Fonda was pictured on the red carpet at the Emmys rocking so brilliantly a hairstyle many would consider to be a “younger” look. Does she think changing her hair is important? No, she says, “but every now and then it’s fun!”
What Fonda does think is key when it comes to hair is keeping it healthy. “Healthy hair always looks good, so it’s important to look after your hair. Use the right products and take care of your hair like you would your skin.
“When you get older, hair and skin tend to get dry, so what I love about L’Oréal Paris is that they make products especially for older woman, and they were the first to do that, and I really appreciate it.”
Take care of your hair like you would your skin.
L’Oreal Paris just launched a range of makeup called Age Perfect to sit alongside its skincare line of the same name. Created especially for mature skin and consisting of everything from foundation and concealer to mascara and lipstick, the products illuminate and blur fine lines but won’t sit in them or feather. The mascara contains keratin to thicken and strengthen fragile lashes.
“I am genuinely very excited about the new L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Foundation (£13) because for the best part of my later life, I have been looking for a foundation that suits the kind of skin you have as you get older, so having a [product] that doesn’t settle in the wrong places, that has great staying power and at the same time doesn’t look heavy is just wonderful,” says Mirren.
