Welcome to our series In the Detail, where we take a magnifying glass to the hottest new beauty trends and zero in on what makes them great. This is the ultimate guide to zeitgeist beauty and how to wear it your way.
There is little more festive in the world of makeup than a red lipstick. Trouble is when it comes to finding your perfect shade, it can all get a bit confusing. You need to think about the texture, the colour payoff and then whether you suit a cool- or a warm-toned hue. It's enough to make even the biggest beauty devotees reach for a tinted balm. Thankfully, Rihanna has taken the stress out of finding your perfect match by creating a one-red-shade-suits-all lip paint called Stunna (£19). On this shoot, the whole team was wearing it, and it suited the myriad skin tones on set.
So with your perfect red lipstick found, the next thing to decide on is how to wear it. That's why we've created three fresh, modern eye looks that go with a red lip. Thing is with a bold pop of colour on the lips, most will automatically reach for a black mascara, perhaps a black liner, and little else. But you can wear a red lip and an eye, and we're here to prove it, from the pink wash that totally disproves the idea that pink and red don't go to the blue eye that looks totally modern (trust us). Keep scrolling for three ways to dress up your red lips this festive season.
Red + Pink
A wash of pink on the eyelids looks seriously fresh and modern, especially if you're daring enough to ditch the mascara altogether. Here the Fenty Beauty artist used Match Stix Matte Skinstik in Espresso (£21) and layered a little Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Ginger Binge/Moscow Mule (£26). Apply and buff the eye colours with a soft fluffy blending brush like the one in the Real Techniques Eye Shade and Blend Set (£11).
With so much colour on the eyes and lips, ditch the blusher and stick to contour. We love Nyx Makeup Highlight & Contour Pro Palette (£18).

Red + Blue
Somewhere along the line, it was written into beauty scripture that a red lip should never be worn with a bold eye. You choose one or the other. Well, we're here to tell you that you can wear whatever you like. Celebrity makeup artists like Patrick Ta and Hung Vanngo have proved time and again that we needn't be afraid of colour or clashing it, for that matter.
To get this look, use the bright Midnight Bolt shade from the Fenty Beauty Eyeshadow Palette (£39) and blend a little under the lower lash line. In the crease, use your contour to add a little warmth and depth to the eye look. Don't want to buy a palette? Try Maybelline Color Show Mono Eyeshadow in 105 Royal Blue (£4).
To pull off this look, perfect your complexion with a little concealer where needed. Or for allover coverage, use the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation (£26).
Red + Gold
A festive—and seriously flattering—pairing is gold and red. Gold tones will warm up a pale winter complexion and aren't a million miles from a rust or bronzer smoky eye. To get the look, dust Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Trophy Wife (£26) onto the lids. To intensify the look, use the Mars on Fire shade from the Fenty Beauty Galaxy Eyeshadow Palette (£39); it's a shimmering copper shade that will warm up the look. Dust a little under the lower lashes too.
To brighten the eye area, use a little cream highlighter on the inner corners to strobe. We love Topshop Glow Highlighter in Gleam (£10).
