It’s Time: 8 Beauty Procedures to Do Now That It’s Fall
Now that plaid and pumpkin spiced-anything are in heavy rotation, it’s time to get serious about undoing all the damage from summer. Right now is the time to repair sun damage, erase dark spots, and give your dried-out strands some moisture, because—to quote one of our favourite shows—winter (skin) is coming. While some treatments are more intense than others, we’ve got the scoop on everything from hair gloss to laser hair removal, Botox, chemical peels and more—arming you with all the information you need for the beauty treatments you’re considering this season. Keep scrolling to see them all!
Undo all the damage you did to your hair this summer with an in-salon gloss to refresh your color. We’re fans of Joico’s Lumishine Treatment, which will transform your hair from the inside out, thanks to special ArgiPlex Technology (you can locate a salon here). The result? High shine, color longevity, and overall healthier hair. If a trip to the salon isn’t on your agenda, enhance your shine at home with a gloss treatment, like Rita Hazan’s Ultimate Shine Gloss ($26) to preserve your tresses’ true hue.
Worried about the dark spots you acquired while lounging poolside? Book an appointment with your dermatologist and get a peel. If you’re looking to reduce fine lines, treat wrinkles, reduce age spots or freckles, and improve the look and texture of your skin, this treatment is for you (aka everyone). Not sure where to start? We’ve got a simple guide that will help you determine the best peel for your skin type. Looking to diminish your dark spots at home? Try Dr. Dennis Gross’s Alpha Beta Peel Extra Strength ($88)—two swipes and your skin will look instantly brighter and clearer.
Performed by either an esthetician or a dermatologist, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning both exfoliate all of your dull summer skin away. A microdermabrasion involves a vaccum-like machine with a diamond tip to exfoliate and clean out your pores. You can recreate the affects at home with one of these products, but we highly recommend going in for a treatment—you’ll see a difference. With dermaplaning, a razor-like tool with a blade at the tip is used to scrape the dead skin cells off the surface of the skin. Neither treatment is painful or requires much downtime (unless you get a very intense chemical peel), making them a good option for almost anyone. (FYI: You can also channel Miley Cyrus and try at-home dermaplaning.)
Your favorite sandals may look Instagram-worthy, but they didn’t do any favors to the soles of your feet this summer. If you’re battling hardened or cracked feet, make them soft again by dropping into your favorite nail salon for a paraffin treatment. Fun fact: It’s a great treatment for your hands, too—hand models swear by this treatment. To re-create the effect at home, try Dr. Scholl’s Paraffin Bath With Temperature Control ($25) to leave your feet soft, smooth, and supple.
Newly approved by the FDA, Kybella is an alternative to liposuction or surgery that aims to treat weight gain in the lower area of our face—or what most people refer to as a double-chin (or even better, “waddle fat”). While it’s not for everyone, if you’ve been struggling chin fat, this might be something to consider. The fat-melting procedure is now available in cosmetic surgeons’ and dermatologists’ offices, and patients will need a series of 12 to 20 injections per visit for optimal results. One thing to keep in mind: You may need to visit your derm two to three times to complete the treatment, and each visit should be spaced a month apart. You can read more about this groundbreaking treatment here.
Now that you are spending less time in the sun, it’s the perfect season to start thinking about laser hair removal. If you’re over-shaving, -tweezing, or -waxing (we can’t blame you), laser hair removal may be for you. This targeted cosmetic procedure beams highly concentrated light into unwanted hair follicles; the pigment in the follicles absorbs the light and then destroys the hair. If you’re considering laser hair removal, you should plan to avoid sun exposure for six weeks before and after treatment. Why? Because sun exposure makes laser hair removal less effective, and complications after treatment are more likely. This may be the perfect excuse to binge-watch House of Cards and stay in the next few weekends…
No secret in the beauty world, Botox injections are best known as a way to temporarily reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. If you don’t fear needles and are looking for a quick and tried-and-true way to banish wrinkles, this treatment might be for you. During the procedure, the botulinum toxin is injected into the skin to relax muscle activity (i.e., the cause of the wrinkle on your face). When administered properly, Botox promises to produce subtle, smooth results—so you can rest assured your skin will look line-free before holiday party madness sets in. Here’s everything you need to know before your first Botox appointment as well as six little-known facts about Botox that might surprise you.
Newly approved by the FDA, Juvaderm Ultra XC might just help you achieve the pout you’ve been dreaming of, à la Kylie Jenner. This new filler is injected into the lips and promises to instantly add fullness, while being the only dermal filler that has proven results lasting up to a whole year. That means no painful monthly visits to the doctor and no additional downtime for healing. Since this has only been approved for adults 21 years of age and older, it’s a lot to consider. However, if you are of age and still struggling with how to achieve Angelina-worthy lips, it’s definitely an option to think about. (Or, you can always fake it with makeup in just four steps.)
