4 Expert-Approved DIY Face Masks for Glowing Skin

Where would we be without Pinterest? The site is amazing for discovering clever tips and tricks that make modern life easier. Whether you're planning a wedding or need some simple storage hacks to escape from the clutter, you're sure to find some new ideas.

The site is perhaps most brilliant for beauty inspiration—from extreme makeup looks to a seemingly endless supply of hairstyle inspiration. Not to mention the homemade aspect of so many of the posts on the site. In fact, homemade beauty products are huge on Pinterest, especially face masks and scrubs. But just how effective can a mask made from the contents of your kitchen cupboards actually be?

According to Dr. Alexis Granite, consultant dermatologist at Cadogan Clinic, even homemade masks can show results. "DIY face masks can be effective, depending on your skin type and the ingredients usedI would recommend researching ingredients and tailoring DIY recipes to suit you. Olive oil, egg yolks, oats, honey, avocado and spices such as turmeric can all play a beneficial role in DIY beauty treatments."

But before you get completely carried away, Dr. Granite recommends a few precautions. "Consider first consulting with a dermatologist for concerns about problem skin and to discuss the best skin care products and treatment options. I would recommend doing a patch test on your skin before applying any ingredients to assess the risk of irritation. Avoid ingredients such as lemon, toothpaste, baking powder, salt and sugar, as they are extremely harsh on the skin, disrupting the pH balance and may cause irritation and sensitivities."

And whether your skin is sensitive or not, Dr. Granite advises against using sugar or salt to scrub the face as it can be too "harsh and abrasive."

If you do find a recipe that you love, don't be tempted to save some for next time. Dr. Granite advises that, like food, homemade face masks are best when made fresh.
